It was £120 and no PIN advised
But what would have been my case with Amazon if it HAD been taken from my step by a passerby?
The retailer is responsible for the item until it's in your possession, so Amazon would have to sort it out if that did happen.  On your doorstep is not in your possession.
That's the point I'm asking about - the driver says he handed it to resident, not he left it on the doorstep
Then report the delivery driver for their actions. Only way to improve things in the future.

I did, but that's not answering my question

It doesn't matter, you still didn't receive it safely, so it remains the retailer's problem.
So you are saying Amazon is obliged to take my word for it that their driver lied about delivery I'm just thinking about a case where someone might order something £1,200 and end up in the same scenario and item stolen from teh doorstep. The driver doesn't know how valuable an item is
No, that's not what I'm saying at all.  Amazon has an obligation to deliver what you paid for to your safe possession.  When you claim that hasn't happened, they are entitled to investigate, not just take your word for it.  If they believe they have sufficient evidence that it was delivered correctly, they'll probably reject any claim from you.  If they don't, they'll probably refund or replace.

have had this happen numerous times. i would always contact amazon, sated it hasn't been handed to resident as logged
their usual response is first to check with neighbours
then they say sometimes the drivers log as delivered but then can still deliver within 3 days
they eventually issue a refund - i haven't said i have not received it. i sate they didnt hand to residents

basically amazon have no control or tracking over the deliveries

It seems like they (or their automated systems/bots/AI) didn't understand your message.
You were saying: I *have* received the item, but your tracking is faulty. It was not "handed to resident" it was left in theftable place.
They interpreted it as a complaint that you *hadn't* had the item, hence the "Have you looked in the bin? Neighbours?" response.

I've had this many times, Amazon "handed to resident" (no it wasn't) and "handed to receptionist" (I don't have one), but also eBay sellers and others that waste money on Tracked *SIGNED FOR* services where mostly the postie doesn't get a signature, just does their own squiggle, forges my name in the box. And then leaves it in a theftable place!

I understand the concern that "Well it was handed to you, you even signed for it!" is the response if stuff goes missing, which complicates things ...

Could it be that the drivers device only has handed to resident option & not left on step or safe place Or Thrown over garden fence 😶‍🌫️

I ordered a fairly expensive watch from Amazon and the order information said "requires signature" well that was OK I would be home all next day.
Next day, knock on the door, by the time I get there the parcel has been left on the step and the driver is just getting back into his van.
What concerns me is that when I looked on the tracking, the driver's notes say "handed to resident" which it certainly wasn't - if I had not been at home it would have been on the doorstep all day. So if someone passing by had stolen it, where would I have stood with Amazon? I say I haven't seen it, their driver says he handed to to me?
The simple answer here is that Amazon either will or will not take your word for it.

If they do not, your only recourse is the court system where a judge will or will not take your word for it, although given the costs and amount of faffing around, along with the lack of evidence of delivery that Amazon could provide in this instance, you'd probably win.

You'd then be forced to extract the money from Amazon which may or may not be an easy task.

There isn't a magic "I Win" button you can press to get the goods or the money back, unfortunately.

Something that expensive would require a pin, so long as you don't give it out before you get the parcel you will be okay as they shouldn't leave it without as that's why the system is there.

I've had empty packages and amazon have simply refunded without question (apparently their system is such that if an item isn't there when packing the parcel is still sent (even if that was the only thing to be in the parcel).

Do you not use Amazon much? I've had items left on the step a few times (I work upstairs so by the time I get to the door they have left it and gone off) often with a photo, different delivery drivers have different methods and they are most likely on a timed schedule.

You would have been refunded as I think that's their policy, more cost effective than having to wait or schedule a redelivery. Not many packages go missing and if a few do in an area they change delivery (e.g. have all deliveries requiring a pin for a while).
