Concern about Amazon delivery

I ordered a fairly expensive watch from Amazon and the order information said "requires signature" well that was OK I would be home all next day.
Next day, knock on the door, by the time I get there the parcel has been left on the step and the driver is just getting back into his van.
What concerns me is that when I looked on the tracking, the driver's notes say "handed to resident" which it certainly wasn't - if I had not been at home it would have been on the doorstep all day. So if someone passing by had stolen it, where would I have stood with Amazon? I say I haven't seen it, their driver says he handed to to me?

Amazon would probably ask you to file a report with the police, and would then work through the matter to a conclusion.  They're not going to just pay up or send a replacement without assuring themselves as bets they can that the theft was a genuine one.

How expensive is "fairly"? I thought normal Amazon practice with high value deliveries was for them to give the customer a PIN to be quoted to the courier before it can be handed over.

Indeed I had to give driver a pin a few weeks ago, item was under £200

It was £120 and no PIN advised
But what would have been my case with Amazon if it HAD been taken from my step by a passerby?

The retailer is responsible for the item until it's in your possession, so Amazon would have to sort it out if that did happen.  On your doorstep is not in your possession.

That's the point I'm asking about - the driver says he handed it to resident, not he left it on the doorstep

It doesn't matter, you still didn't receive it safely, so it remains the retailer's problem.  At the end of the day, a court claim for a £120 watch - if you took it that far - would look at the balance of probabilities.  It's unlikely that you would receive the watch then go to the trouble of falsely reporting a supposed theft to the police, raise a claim to Amazon and then take them to court if they didn't send you another watch or refund you, so you'd probably win the case.

So you are saying Amazon is obliged to take my word for it that their driver lied about delivery I'm just thinking about a case where someone might order something £1,200 and end up in the same scenario and item stolen from teh doorstep. The driver doesn't know how valuable an item is
