FreeBear that's interesting, thanks. It's working ok. I reckon it's something simple but no chance of getting it looked at.
Neighbours all had the same boiler  when the houses were built 25yrs ago and most worked for that long. This has only been used for 8yrs though it was standing idle the rest of the time.
Goodness knows what will be the 'in thing to replace it when the time comes.
And thanks for the tip about turning the TRVs up to high when opening. Makes sense when you think about it.

Yes you're right ThisIsWeird. It's spark ignition.
Standard for me is to use things until they must be replaced or else. This keyboard has holes in some keys it's so old. Fortunately I can touch type

If the current trend continues, a heat pump will likely be the only option. By the looks of it, you have a mix of 22mm & 15mm pipe, so just the radiators would need to be replaced with larger ones (as well as the DHW tank).
There has been talk of supplementing natural gas with hydrogen, but this would require major upgrades to the gas distribution network. A couple of pilot schemes were running to test the idea out, but I gather these have been a total disaster and failed to produce meaningful results.

    Well that's reassuaring - ish.
And good luck with installing heat pumps in the tiny places us oldies have been encouraged to move into.
"I gather these have been a total disaster and failed to produce meaningful results." well that made me laugh :D
Like so many of these grand ideas that are jumped on and aren't thought through to the end.

I think my ceiling noise maybe to do with a pipe running near the edge of the loft and could be cooling between boiler firings. The sound does come from there, with the ventilation from outside.
But with a duff leg a lot of the time I'll save that little exploration.

I know of someone that moved into a small <ahem> barn conversion - The place is barely big enough to swing a dead cat and about the same size as a triple garage. Has an air-to-air heat pump installed in the ceiling and appears to keep the place reasonably warm. As to running costs, I can't comment, but on the right tariff, there is no reason it would be any worse than gas or oil.
