Dunelm receipt policy

After paying at Dunelm, I was asked my email so they can send me a receipt.  I declined and got a paper receipt.  Apparently paper receipts are to be phased out and email receipts only.  No returns will be allowed without an emailed receipt. Is this legal?  Not everyone uses a computer and some do not want countless emails from every shop they visit.  Faulty goods should still be exchanged though surely?

They should, but to exercise your consumer rights you would need to prove you had them, which means proving you bought the item from that store, so you would need a receipt. In terms of a receipt there is no legal requirement for one, there can be for an invoice, but only when both parties to the transaction are VAT registered.

Are you referring to till receipts? Presumably if you paid by card you could still request the card machine transaction receipt? Whilst that wouldn't specify the item (does the till receipt?) it would show the amount spent and when.

Another option could be to buy online then do click & collect in-store if you don't want home delivery.

For a return because something is faulty, all you need is proof of purchase. That does not have to be a receipt, although having a receipt will make it easier.
Change of mind returns, they can implement whatever policy they like because that’s based on their goodwill and not on any statutory rights.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

Why do you think it would be illegal?
They don't even have to accept returns for items purchased instore for change of mind returns.
Never understand why people think this is such a bad thing. Simply set up a free email account and use it only for receipts. You can even use the +Google trick for one email account so you know which store has used your email.

Take a photograph at the till when purchasing.  That should do as proof of purchase if the item is defective.  As others have said, returns due to change of mind don't have to be accepted even with proof of purchase.

Doesn't really tally together otherwise nowhere would give a receipt to avoid consumer rights!

Yes OP they need to deal with faulty items regardless.

Simple to stop further emails. Just use the unsubscribe link at the bottom of the email.👍

Personally other than receipts, never get other mail from them, unlike many other retailers.

I just have a separate email address set up for these sorts of things so my 'main' email address is not so cluttered.

We humans are so resistant to change, see it all the time in work, its quite funny - people hate X system, X system becomes obsolete so gets replaced, everyone now dislikes new system and says how great X system was :)
