Free Trial Sign Up that never was? Media maze digital?

Anyone heard of mediamaze . digital ?????

My partner got a bill for the end of some 7 day free trial

They are some 'media' company. From what we gathered. They offer videos and games - for a subscription. This is all from what we've read after the fact.

Seems like on Monday 28th my partner signed up

That day she was out with a friend so a lot of small purchases at pubs/burger king/etc

They're T&C are all carefully worded. Telling people how they signed up through a banner ad. But not really telling you who they are or what/where you signed up.

They won't refund the £30

The bank seem to be on their side.

Anyone know anything about them? As it's more of a puzzle - how they managed to weasel the sign up. And if you don't realise you have signed up - how can you cancel?

Anyway my partner has 100% not used any of their services... so it's currently an expensive lesson... we'll a £30 lesson... that modern life can be rubbish.

The rest of this post is their info about payments, does it sound like they know they are tricking people???

Basebone are a South African company that offer content as a service, they're a platform basically for other companies to sell as content to their customers.

Media Maze is a trading style of Stylefish Entertainment Ltd that is an English company with a sole director based in South Africa but owned by another person in Monaco.

On the surface the later is buying the services of the former and just reselling them.

The signup process to Media Maze is fairly straightforward, on the page, not in a hidden T&Cs link, it says it free for 7 days but you will be charged £29.99 on the 14 Nov when your free trial ends. After giving your email address you have to give all your credit card details so its fairly blatant that your going to be paying for something.

It's not exactly clear how they came across this company, why they gave their credit card details to them or why they thought it was free despite needing to give credit card details.

I'll guess it might have been a consequence of "a lot of small purchases at pubs".

    Ok.

The strange thing is - it's not something she knowingly signed up for.

I mean she's never used any product from them

She has Netflix. And that's all she uses.

But as I said to her, how did they get your credit card.

All she did on that day was go out on the town [so apple pay].

And bought a train ticket online trip.com

It's not like she has some app, or knowingly signed up for something.

The way the website is worded [T&C] are a little strange. The good news is - there are a lot of 'it's a scam' posts and the bank reversed their decision and refunded her.

It's strange they can't say - you signed up for x or y. I mean if they said - you signed up for a chess app... ok she doesn't play chess at all, just an example. Then you might go... "oh yeah, I did"... as it is - if she did sign up for something, they have done themselves no favours.

And also they are meant to email she had signed up for something. They never sent any email.

And my partner is adamant she didn't sign up for anything

So it's all a mystery to me - how they got the card, why they broke their own rules in not emailing a confirmation, and the obvious lack of knowledge of the service [as in having never been on their website ever, or used any of their media] by my partner...

Given she can't remember signing up, what are the chances the email given was mis-typed and hence an email was sent but she didn't get it as it was an incorrect email.

Whilst i don't like these services, the majority of people who claim they didn't sign up, eventually work out they did, they were just not paying attention when they did so and did it without realising at the time.

Unfortunately it was unlikely they were doing anything illegal, just not as clearly as they ideally should and it got past their attention at the time.

It isn't a scam, but it is worth people being reminded of and to pay attention.

    Bet it's Trip.com...
& clicked on a offer for cash back on another ticket.

Does she check her emails? Especially Spam/Junk on a regular basis?

There is nothing bank can do with these payments, until they are cancelled. So they are not siding with retailer. They are following card regulations.

How do you know she signed up on that date?
    - Did she get an email? If so where else does she use that address?
    - Is it from a bank statement? If so the transaction will often shop up days later.

They must have got her email address also.
  • The same thing happened to us. The first we knew of it was a £29.99 charge on our credit card to a company called OK24care.com. Turns out we apparently started a media subscription with Media Maze at 11.20PM on 7th Nov, with the first week free, and then the first payment came out at 11:30PM on 14th Nov. We certainly did not sign or share our email or card details with anyone at the date/time they stated. We're now fighting to get the first payment back but will probably be a losing battle as credit card company don't see it as fraud. We cannot find any details or customer reviews online for either OK24care or Media Maze which seems odd for a company that appatently provides media services.

Hi I've had this happen to me recently, it was picked up by my bank and stopped when they tried to take £47.43 from my account shortly after I tried to register with Ringo, somehow I'd clicked on their link and registered (which I didn't do) but now back home (as I was away) I've checked my email only to find they have sent me a 'your free trial is live' email together with the information that once the 'free trial' is concluded (1 week) I will then be charged £29.99 per month automatically. I never signed up for this and can only guess that it was a ringo scam type thing which I didn't automatically recognise as I was trying to sort out whilst standing in a car park, so grateful for my bank stopping the payment request, but strange amount to be trying to take in the first place, so obviously a scam but when you are trying to do something in a hurry (and looking for traffic wardens to avoid a fine) it's easy to think that what you are looking at is the app, however, at least I know how I came to be duped and thanks to Nationwide for being vigilant.
