Landrover Discovery from Sytner group & new engine/faults, can I pursue a claim and send back.

Bought a 2018 Discovery from Sytner 3 years ago, lease ends May 2025.  We've had nothing but trouble with. First day we got it there was an issue with it slowing for some reason, then week later we found mcdonalds in the back so obviously not cleaned or looked at properly. After 12 months it started to be dangerous, slowing at junctions, sometimes stopping, turns out needed new engine. We had the warranty so didn't pay anything. Then after that it's been back maybe 10 times now with faults in 2 years. Sometimes months in the dealer, we've had to manage with no car which is a nightmare. We got it on PHP I think.  The car has been dangerous with latest incident 2 weeks ago fuel injector failing so fuel spurting out, we got told would eb 2 weeks ago we get it back after repair under warranty but still nothing and the dealer lied to us and just tells us will be soon, that was 2 weeks ago and we are having to spend a small fortune on taxi and trains and my job meant I cancelled 3 jobs as I could not get there.

Do we have a case with the Ombudsman and if so who do we take to them, dealer we bought it from, dealer who are useless and mess up, they even smashed our windscreen last repair in May or finance company who we have already been to and they declined it via a JLR case direct.

The car is unsafe and unfit for purpose and dangerous, we are fed up of it breaking down time after time and having no car. This is the 10th time now it's bene in the dealer for repair within 2 years. Its main dealer Landrover Sytner we are dealing with and bought it from.

Do we have any options?

Did you buy it or did you lease it?

What ombudsman are you referring to?

  • Financial Ombudsman or should it be motoring one? We leased it via PCP.

PCP in not a lease, it’s just hire purchase with a balloon payment.
  • OK that's what we have done then.

Financial ombudsman deals with financial complaints.  Not vehicle.   Your issues appear to be motor related rather than financial.   You may wish to post in the motoring section of the board and see if anyone there has a view on what you can do.

My gut feeling, with buying a used vehicle 3 years ago, you will have limited consumer protection but maybe someone in the motoring section could help.

  • If that dealer's useless, take it to a different one.

If you've lost faith in the car, look to terminate the PCP early and sell it.

Three years after purchase of a now 6-yo car, your consumer rights are minimal.

(How do you not notice McDonalds in it before agreeing the purchase, let alone for a week after purchase?)

As above, if the PCP ends in May it must be getting close to the zero cost VT point.
As soon as it is fixed, and while it is still working, VT it as quickly as you can and get rid.

The finance company won't take it back broken, or if it is in the garage on a 4 month wait to be fixed.

Then under no circumstances buy another JLR. The general consensus on here is you don't buy one with your own money.

I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

If it is running now and its an option terminate the finance voluntarily.

Always read reliability tables before a purchase.  They tend not to lie and Land Rover have been bottom of the list for years.
