Midwife Trouble!

  • I would suggest registering at another practice for your maternity care.

You are entitled to be registered anywhere for your "maternity care" you would still see you "proper" gp for anything non pregnancy related but would be able to see a different midwife.

This post is quite sad there seems to be a real distinct lack of communication by all parties and it seems to have developed into another 'bash a midwife' post.:o

You do not need to register with another GP practice to change your midwife. :wall:

Your GP and midwifery services are two seperate organisations. The midwives would literally only be renting space from the practice or PCT if they are based in the community, as they are employed by the hospital.

To get a new midwife, ask when you next book an appt as it should be that easy, or you can ask to speak to the team leader who will be able to sort it out with no fuss.

    Changing your midwife

Changing your midwife depends on how you were originally assigned your midwife in the first place.

You may receive all your maternity care from the hospital. In this case, if you have an objection to a particular midwife then raise your problem with the Head of Midwifery Services. He or she will listen to your problem and if they feel it is valid, try to arrange an alternative midwife to carry out your care. This will depend on staffing. However, you may find that hospital care means a different midwife on nearly every visit, so it may be less of a problem.

Shared care between a hospital and GP also tends to mean you will see a number of midwives, at least on your hospital visits. Requesting a different midwife at hospital is done in the same way as above. A different midwife at your GP may be more of a problem as midwives are usually ‘assigned’ to a practice. You may have to go elsewhere for your care if you don’t want to be treated by a certain midwife.

The final type of care is entirely from a midwife, as part of a team of midwives. In this case you are usually assigned two midwives who carry out nearly all your care, including delivery. You could request to be moved to another team of two if you felt strongly about one midwife. Again, the Head of Midwifery Services will be able to give you guidance.

LondonDiva you are quite right about there being no need to change practices to get a new midwife but not all midwives are employed by the hospital. Around here they are split into 2 teams, community and acute with the community ones being employed by the PCT.

Not sure about the rest of the country, but in London, community midwives are not employed by the PCT. They are as all midwives in the city still employed by the local hospital

all you need to do is go to another doctors and ask to register for your maternity care there . It really is that simple , no phoning midwives or your doctors or hospitals , just go to the doctors you want to register your pre-natal care with . I should know because this is exactly what I have done with both my daughters , 1st time I was living in Chatham , had a doctor at the bottom of my road but went to the next surgery up the road for my pregnancy care as I didn't like my doctor at the time , 2nd time (2005) I lived in Crayford , but wanted to have my daughter at Medway Hospital so went back to my old doctors (my old doctor had left 2 yrs previous) and asked for my maternity care to be registered there . No problems at all and I had my daughter July 2005 in Medway Hospital .

Basically then all your pregnancy care is at the doctors you see your midwife at and all other illnesses are dealt with by your normal GP .
Baby Thomas born 3 months early by emergency section on 21/1/09 weighing 1lb 15ozs .
Thomas came home after 3 months and 2 days in hospital weighing 5lb 15ozs
    Thomas weighed 21lb 4ozs on his 1st birthday , a total weight gain of 18lbs 5ozs !

well if you went to another doctors here you'd still end up with the same midwife! there are far more doctors surgeries than midwives in this town :)

If you have serious problems with the midwife and the things that she says, ask her to put it in writing, along with her NMC pin number so that you have a record of it.
Put in a complaint with your GP and the SOM at your local hospital about her, including a copy of what she has said, and DEMAND,not ask, that they provide you with a more appropriate midwife and that you will only accept visits at home.
If the SOM refuses (which legally, she cannot not, they have a duty of care),then send another snotty letter stating that you wish to know the reasons for refusal so that you can approach your local trust to fund an INDEPENDANT MIDWIFE.
Believe me,you will get the care that you want as long as you stick to your guns and let them know what you want!
    Good luck!:p

  • I am a midwife and am sorry to hear of your experience.
One way of avoiding this midwife is to ask your gp to refer you to consultant only care. Good luck
