    Thanks for coming back OP.

I've just checked my old e-mails for the one and only Ryanair flight I have ever taken this September, and I have at least 2 emails from them before travelling warning me of a check-in fee right in the e-mail body before I even visited their booking page or website.

The e-mail on the left was entitled "Need a hand?" and the one on the right "You forgot something...".

Both look like standard boilerplate e-mails which they probably send to all passengers.

Are you sure you were never notified, or did you just not notice?  We're all human after all.  :)

    • The poor only have expenses.
    • The middle class buy liabilities they think are assets.

Yes you're right maybe didn't notice and took it for granted. I don't normally fly with these airlines.
  • I appreciate this thread has run its course now, and the consensus is that Ryanair are playing fair, but I too missed the information. I did not miss all the "PAY x TO GET y" banners & notifications. I was aware I'd get a poor seat, no drink, long queues, pitiful baggage allowance, etc... but the only place I found the airport check-in fee warning was the bottom of their eighth marketing e-mail, which I found after getting stung.

I travel frequently on business (albeit not to Ireland) so I'm used to establishing and reporting costs ahead of booking. My line manager, who travels internationally a lot, made the same mistake. Furthermore, consumer rights laws mandate businesses ensure key terms and charges are clear & transparent, and embedding charge warnings in marketing guff is not that.

For what it's worth, I believe the information is deliberately obscured as part of an underhand way to conduct even a budget business. Having complained myself to Ryanair, I received a terse stock reply within minutes and all communications since have been brazenly dismissed. Budget or not, I think it's disgraceful and a company turning 100's millions in profits should not be treating customers with such contempt.

They positively thrive on doing so, with Michael O'Leary's philosophy being along the lines of any publicity is good publicity.

Their famously combative attitude to their customers can be quite amusing when it comes to their social media channels though....

Lots of people who travel with Ryanair manage to find the information you missed - and avoid the check in fee.

    I too missed the information.

I believe the information is deliberately obscured
So, I just set up a dummy flight booking at the website and very early in the booking phase, you have to choose between ticket types to include or not include the check in:

I really can't see how the fact there is an extra charge for check in can be claimed to be deliberately obscured.
