Sadly I don't think you'll get anywhere with no matter how good your complaint is, it's like going to a posh restaurant and after a meal trying to complain that the bill is too high.
I'd suggest that OP's complaint is more like going to McDonalds and being miffed at the lack of silver service and crystal glassware.... ;)

The formal complaint to Ryanair will fail.
There is nothing further you can do.
So, write off the money and make sure to read T&Cs.

I have doubts whether ZannyBD did or will ever return to receive the requested advice, which is of course correct.

I am looking for some advice as the way forward to address a complaint against this so called budget airline RyanAir. What I can do after I have complaint and got no positive response from the airline for a refund for check in fees to travel?
I have written to them formally and have been told that's their policy etc but I am not satisfied. An airline should provide it's mere passengers a free check in service at the airport as a common courtesy. What about travellers who are not able to access online facilities or not capable of doing so? This is a disgrace to be honest to be even charge a checkin fee for an infant that has no seat. I ended up paying more for the checkin fees for 5 passengers to Rome than I did in the airline tickets to go!
Please can anyone advice as to what I can do.
I just flew with Ryanair for the first time.  The requirements to check in online or pay a large fee was clear from the outset.  It's your choice to not check in ahead of the airport.
Unfortunately I never got these notifications stating the fee or ofcourse I would have done so in time.
  • You can check in for free at the airport - on your mobile phone 😅

Sadly I don't think you'll get anywhere with no matter how good your complaint is, it's like going to a posh restaurant and after a meal trying to complain that the bill is too high.

All you can do now is to not use their service again.

Agreed, thanks for this kind reply. I honestly was never notified of that charge ahead of time so it came as a huge shock. A very expensive error on my side for sure.

Various online articles state that it was 2008 or 2009 that Ryanair started charging for airport check in.

They make it fairly clear during their booking process, and also send reminder emails. Some of their optional bundles (luggage etc) include free airport check in.

Unfortunately OP you won't get any refund, you agreed to the T&Cs when you booked.
I never got these notifications of a fee and the night before their website was down but apparently was back up at 2am so I should have done it then. Thanks for your reply.

Ryanair "is" a budget airline not a "so called" one.

Common courtesies, such as paying check in staff to do something that customers are requested to during the booking process, costs money which is not the business model of budget airlines.

If passengers are not able or capable of accessing online facilities, how did they manage to book their ticket in the first place?

When I flew with them for the first time in September, I recieved many explicitly clear messages explaining the importance of checking in online, and the charges if I did not do so.

You can check in 30 days before your flight departs, or 24 hours before if you haven't reserved a seat. Why were you unable to do this?
I never saw any emails or on the website about a fee to check in. I did however, try to check in the day before but I wasnt able to allocate seats for free then when I went back the site was down for maintenance. I was told it was back up at 2am and should have checked in then. It was a huge oversight apparently that cost me dearly. I won't be traveling with them again for a while.
  • If it's in their Terms and Conditions I doubt there is anything you can do..........maybe somebody who is more conversant with the Ts&Cs can give a more educated response ?
May I ask why you didn't check in online ?
Thanks for your kind response. Alot of things happened from not able to do seat allocation at the time, to their website being down for maintenance. I wasn't able to do the check in online as well as I didn't know about the check in fee before time. A very costly mistake on my end apparently.
