Are you allowed to access your work emails on your personal phone? My company would have kittens if I did that and I'd be pretty quickly out of a job.

Fine if the business runs a BYOD (Bring your own device) policy with appropriate security software, such as Microsoft Intune or VMware AirWatch, loaded onto your personal phone to allow it to access corporate emails and other business applications like Teams, Sharepoint, Workday etc. I haven't had a separate work mobile phone in about 8 years.

BYOD is outright not allowed by most regulators and for non-regulated firms cyber insurance normally prohibits BYOD.

(Plus the possibility the personal device could be examined by the company for legitimate business reasons)

Managed devices is allowed by pretty much every regulated industry outside of defence and no issues with cyber insurance where it is allowed either.

Mobile operating systems have profiles these days which when combined with the companies management systems sandbox the work profile which mean they can have the administrative access and control without being able to access the rest of the device or personal information.

10's of millions of phones globally are using these solutions. Far from uncommon or an issue. To claim otherwise is just wrong.

Absolutely right. I work for a business which is paranoid about data security (we handle a lot of healthcare data) but most people use their own phone with Microsoft Intune which gives access to email, Teams, Sharepoint and other internal applications. You need to have a business justification (such as doing international travel) to get a company phone.

BYOD solutions used to be very clunky and a pain to use but these days they are pretty good. I have mine setup so that Work Mode is automatically turned off between 6pm and 8am so I don't get any work notifications.

There is a difference between a managed device and BYOD.

Just one example, the FCA effectively banned the use of personal devices in 2018 in MiFid firms. https://www.theregister.com/2018/01/08/fca_mifid_gold_plating_bans_byod/

Also, The National Centre for Cyber Security has guidance (see https://www.ncsc.gov.uk/collection/device-security-guidance/bring-your-own-device) which points out the risks. The costs associated with those risks (and future risks such as the forthcoming right to disconnect ) are why many firms no longer consider BYOD appropriate.

I see.  In which case we are talking about the same thing just with different definitions. We certainly wouldn't allow personal laptops and tablets for work - they can't even connect to the corporate network or Microsoft cloud apps - and all phones must have MDM installed
