That's quite different then - as it is unlikely they accidentally put in the word "FREE" instead oft he actual proce.
Far more likely that the software that their website runs on has automatically generated the word "FREE" when the price was set at £0, rather than someone typing it in. I'm not exactly sure what difference this would make though, as it's an obvious mistake.

I don't think that's likely at all - the syntax of the two statements is totally different.  Moreover - it is very unlikely that intentionally setting the price of something to £0 is a sufficiently frequent event to warrant a coding an automatic translation.

Sorry, for the misinformation. On the site it said FREE instead of any price, when added to basket it said price due £0.

However, as Grumpy_chap states, there was likely a condition on the free-ness (flooring shops don't generally just give away flooring for free) - do you know what the conditions were, and did you meet them?
Some do, although it tens to be samples. Rather than boxes of them.
Well yes, I was assuming we weren't talking about samples here.   Or freecycle.   Flooring companies don't even give away small off-cuts of carpet.
  • There was nothing no stipulation to it being free. It was packs of flooring not samples. I have a friend that also orderd it he resived his, he then orderd more and that same thing happened to him called up and asked to pay for the second lot. He didn't mention the flooring he had resived.

I suggest he keeps the money for the first lot he received to one side, they may yet bill him for it.

The system we use for our website comes with multiple different extensions you can install that will do exactly this, because "Free" is more attractive and easier for people to understand than "£0". I would expect all the major CMSs to have this as an option or an add-on, and most companies use some kind of CMS rather than coding their own site. If you supply samples or provide a particular service or add-on free of charge, there's a perfectly good reason to have the site work like that. Nothing odd or untoward about it, and it allows for a product to be mistakenly set as "Free" without requiring more human error than a simple slip of a finger on the keyboard. If you're using a CMS (content management system) it would in many cases be more difficult to write something into the price box, because they're generally set up to only take numerical input.

Regardless, as I said, it's an obvious mistake, so it's a moot point. Nobody is going to enforce this, and most people will not expect to receive packs of flooring for free.

Agreed, "Free" instead of "£0.00" was an option on web software I was using well over ten years ago.
