There's no minimum with an encapsulated element kettle.1

But if you boil 150ml in a microwave, you'll use pretty much the same amount of energy with a kettle boiling 250ml. So no real saving to be had. And what water you don't use from the kettle will still be there next time you want to boil some more.pseudodox said:@FreeBear
Yes - but the kettle minimum level is 250ml, so if I only want 100ml/150ml/200ml I would be overfilling it. A waste of electricity & water

Even if the inhome display of a smart meter cost a tenner a month to run it would still save me money. I've not had mine plugged in since a few weeks after the meter was fitted, 2.5 years ago and so it costs me nothing. I use the Octopus app to see what I've used when. Having the smart meter means I can use tracker and half hourly tracker tariffs which has significantly reduced my bills. Each to their own0

An IHD will use less than 0.6W including the mains adaptor. So 1kWh at 25p will last well over 2 months. Turn off the backlight overnight (most will do it automatically), and you'll get 3 months or more for your 1kWh.teaselMay said:Even if the inhome display of a smart meter cost a tenner a month to run it would still save me money.

With my annual electricty usage being in the region of £540 I am not going to lose sleep over the cost of heating (not necessarily boiling) a small amount of water once in a blue moon in the microwave. I don't want to reboil "old" water in the kettle and the cost of a new encapsulated element kettle would take years to offset in any saving on heating water. When my reliable old kettle gives up the ghost then is the time to buy a replacement. Consigning it to recycling/landfill would be environmentally unfriendly and the capital outlay of replacing to save fractions of a penny would be verging on the ridiculous.FreeBear said:

I turned it off because it wasn't useful rather than the very small energy consumption (My tenner a month was just demonstrating how much it's saving me), it just didn't provide information in a useful way for me. Whereas the apps do.FreeBear said:
