I went to Focus in Aldershot yesterday & picked up a 8000BTU Air conditioner for £143.20. It's down in price from £179.99, thats appx. a 25% discount. Works well & is quite enough. All electronic, no dials...0

B&Q still have the 20% off online, although unfortunately a lot of the cheaper ones are now out of stock.

I got a good quality portable one from Wickes last year for £149. (anyone checked Wickes this year?) Its had lots of use. Firstly to cool the kids rooms before bed, just chuck the hose out the smallest window and plug in.
Its too noisy to sleep with in the same room, but it blows with a lot of force so I put it in a room across the landing and point it at my door way, works fine.
Mine has a tank which fills with water from the air and you eventually have to empty. This is low grade distilled water and is great for irons etc to avoid scale damage.
I also have one of those evaporative one -Rubbish!! works well in Arizona probably but they work by evaporation (dur!) and if its humid like it is here, no evaporation as the air is saturated - no cooling. Didn't even bother getting it out the loft this year.

If buying a unit in store beware of how it comes, I have a big saloon and when I saw the Wickes unit I thought yes no problem, until I found myself in the carpark with a huge box full off polystyrene, a mini pallet and so on. Eventually after unpacking it, collapsing the boxes I got it all home.0 -
We just picked up a B&Q "Evaporative Air Cooler" - one of their special deals by the front door of our B&Q Warehouse.
No where on the packing does it say "Air Conditioning" (because it's not!), but this is a fantastic way to cool a conservatory, lounge etc during the hot weather (no, really....).
We figured that if it was no good, we would return it - but it has been a pleasant surprise!!!
Thought I'd recommend it - considerably cheaper than an AirCon unit, it is quiet, has a timer facility and remote control.
Cheers!!0 -

hi
i am looking for a aircon unit but totally confused about the various ones.
is the 12000btu the best/ value for money and cooling etc
also do any of the machines be used for heating in winters
and are they energy efficient?

I'm no expert, but I don't think a 12000 btu unit is necessarilly the best value for money etc.
It depends on the size of the room it will be used in. An 8000/9000 btu unit will be fine for a smallish room, but for a large room then you might need a more powerful unit obviously, say 12k or more.
The B&Q 8000 btu unit for example says it is designed to cool a shaded room sized 22m squared, or a bright sunny room of 14m sq. It is also highly energy efficient - rated A. Every unit's specifications should list this information so its easy to see what youre getting.
Personally I've never seen any units that double as heaters.0
