Cheap Air Conditioners B&Q (merged)

I was going to post this on this thread but seen as that is in 'Gone But Not Forgetten', and as this is a different shop & price & offer etc I've made a new thread for it. But please merge them if needed.
B&Q currently have 20% off all their air conditioners, climate control units, and fans etc. Offer ends Thursday 23rd.

There is an 8000 BTU unit (B&Q make) reduced from £199 to £158. I went in today but it is out of stock everywhere! Zero stock at Swindon, Trowbridge, Chippenham, Newbury, and Bristol main warehouse. (Didn't go round each one (phoned up)).

Ordering one into the store could take up to 3 weeks  , yet they said buying one online, (add £10 delivery) is only 3 days... (But site says 14 days)

But advertised on their special offers board instore, is an AirForce 8000BTU air conditioner reduced from something like £149 to £108 I think ? BUT they did not have this one in stock, had no information on it on their system, no brochure, no display model, not even a shelf space for it! So not sure what the deal is there. It's not even on their site - does it even exist ?!

Like I say, I need one, and think this AirForce one might be a better make than the B&Q one, plus its ~£50 cheaper.

Any advise please ? Has anyone got either of these models?

I've read the other post I linked to above - very interesting, anyone buying one is advised to read it first. From that thread, I understand they may be too noisy to sleep with etc etc but that's not a problem.

Crikey, I just checked and my room is 39.4 degrees C now, thats with all 3 windows wide open, and door open. I'm sweating like a rapist on a bus. And it isn't just me that doesn't like it - my computer's gfx card is 59 degrees @ idle  .

Sorry to go on a bit.

Thanks in advance if anyone has any advise :j

  • are both models you mention too loud for a bedroom, and is the sound any more than leaving a fan on all night

Hi, I'm not sure. I would think they both would be. In the other thread lots of people suggest putting it on Cold to cool the room before going to bed.

I think someone else said they did manage to fall asleep with it on.
  • If you do buy one of the single unit ones it's well worth taking the cover off the back ond carefully removing the accumulated dust of the heat exchangers to keep them working properly, bought mine from B&Q a couple of years ago and if you don't clean the lint off the lower one the chiller cuts out every 10 mins or so due to overheating, they are noisy but I find it more trouble sleeping in the heat than coping with the noise, mines only about 2 foot from the bed.

I bought an A/C unit from homebase 4 years ago, its noisy, also has extractor tube like the tubes on the old tumble dryers which means that the bedroom door doesn't close as I direct the hot air out into the hall so this prevents the room cooling down as much as it should because of door not closing properly. At the time of purchase I bought a ducting kit to direct the hot air through into loft (was going to hide it in fitted wardrobe as its unsightly) anyway have never got round to doing this. I know that the little water cooled air coolers are quite effective and don't require this ducting so it might be worth considering?

Has anyone got the split units. I want to know if the part of the system that fits onto the outside wall has the brackets to come with it? as they are expensive themselves??
    Thanks

Air coolers (as opposed to air conditioners) won't be worth the money - a fan with ice in front of the blades will do the same job, but much much cheaper :)
