How about Google Docs? You'd just be updating one document wherever you are.1

Oh that's a thought. Can't remember though if you can insert photos and wrap text etc. It used to have limitations but my knowledge is so out of date - as you can see by the questions I ask !

Word Online defaults to saving on OneDrive, no bad thing as you then have versioning and certainty of backup. To get a document saved to your local drive -
Click on File in the top-left corner of Word Online
Select Save As from the dropdown menu.
Choose Download a Copy3 -
As above, you get free online storage with www.office.com using OneDrive. You can save locally as well if you need to (or copy it offline).
The online version has pretty much all the feature most people need.
Using the open source offerings is a bit 1990's these days, on-demand online is the better route for most who want Office apps for free with either Microsoft Office or Google.2 -

Excellent! Thanks folks. That's some choice. I'll play around with them when we get into winter and I can't go outside.I'll also ask the people who offer free help to make it a quicker process learning them - though usually they are just to help people who need the basics like logging on and email/

The free online office services offered by Microsoft and Google are pretty much equivalent for most general users2

Can't you just use Libreoffice and change the default Save As settings to docx etc.....
I've used Libreoffice for over 20 years and have always used the Microsoft format settings.
I'm using my android tablet so can't check where you make the changes but it will be in their Help section.1
