Word online, Libra office etc advice please.

I need some help in knowing how these work.
I've used Open Office, Libra Office and Word in the past which all used to save to my computer and I could open on the library computers to print there.
Post pandemic they have only Word and I can't open Office as an Odt. to edit a document. Also emailing documents most people have Word.

I've looked around the net and I can't see exactly how the 'free online Word' saves - whereto or if it's compatible with the standard paid for version.
Libra Office I believe can be opened in the librarys Word. Is this so? and can I convert the document to Word? I also believe it can be saved to my computer which I prefer?

So much sales patter but I can't find the answers I need in a search

I'll leave it there lol. Surfice it to say I need a document writer for my computer that will convert to the Word in the library for printing and for sending to others.

You've all been so helpful giving me information that I need to find the necessary gadgets and such so I know what I'm looking for and how to make the right decision.

Aparantly not.......I've just had a look and it's like medieval history :)
I didn't update Open Office because I didn't need to for what I wanted.
Remember Palm? Star Writer? Office 95?........I tried to do a screen print just for the laugh but it wouldn't.
I really think I need to get something new :D

LibraOffice Writer can save in Word formats, but if you want to send documents to others just to read then you can export them from Writer as a PDF file which everyone worth a computer can read.

Library Office can save/support .docx/.doc but people report compatibility issues with OpenOffice and .docx but not with .doc

Missed the other replies - while I was typing so thanks, I'm reading and digesting.
Thanks KeepPedalling, problem with that is that for something I would like to work on at home and at the library I can't open it to do so.

Also can a document be saved as PDF and in word format so that I can continue to edit it? I guess it's  a case of copy n paste into a second document to save differently.

I've been asked to write my life history  :)   in relation to my town for the museum and I want to add photos, wrap text and such.
Also have an unusual family tree which I forward to a museum. Perhaps why I have a computer and word docs that are as old as the hills :D
I just feel it would be easier with an up to date programme - maybe not?

Yes, the PDF version is only for distribution to others, you still have your original file for editing whether you are using .docx or .odf.

I've been using FreeOffice by Softmaker for months now and found it to be very close to MS Office. No problem with creating Word docx.   Excel lookalike is good as well.

There are two ways that I'm aware of of creating a separate (non-editable) PDF version of a MS Word document, leaving the word document unaltered.

From the Word document, you can either 1) select 'print' and then choose the 'microsoft print to pdf' option rather than sending it to a physical printer, or 2) you can use the 'Export' option whcih will create a separate pdf.

I'm, as always, grateful for any advice but was hoping for some info about Word Online.........it doesn't look popular judging by the replies
"I've looked around the net and I can't see exactly how the 'free online Word' saves - whereto or if it's compatible with the standard paid for version."
I was hoping for something that would open with Word at the library for editing there.
Preferably that I can travel with on a usb or save to my computer.
But I'm learning lots of other things from this thread :)
