Is anyone else seeing a huge increase in Thames Water bill?

finlon said:Hi folks, new to this forum but wanted to check if there was a wider trend with Thames Water hiking bills, whether I have any right to reject. It's unclear to me what Ofwat have allowed given the situation with their financial black hole. My bill (for two people) has gone from £18 to £60pcm. Any similar stories or advice would be appreciated.0

Water meter, or based on old rateable value?
Possible water leak? All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.1 -
Average overall increase by about 10%; waste water charges were raised slightly higher. I'm a low user but your increase indicates there is something else going on as others have said.0

I have a water meter and have lived where I do for over 9 years, always sent my reading when requested. Low user. Imagine my surprise. When a meter man knocked on my door and read my meter the other day, it must have been okay when he submitted it, previous 993 now 1007, previous reading was 973, so normal usage for me. DD was raised by £2.00 last June. Friends without a meter, so rateable value have had their DD raised by a lot. We are both within the Thames Water area.Paddle No 21:wave:0

Yes my bill has doubled year on year. I have had a water meter since 2019 and paid by DD. This is how my bill has increased:- 2019 = £21, 2020= £21, 2021= £21, 2022= £23, 2023= £32, 2024=£65. Ever since Thames Water had that big fine my bill has increased!0

Update on my last comment.
I have now spoken to Thames water and understand what is going on, it's not right but I understand.
The main problem is the water meter is only read officially twice a year, which is in June and Dec. If it is not read or you do not submit a reading you will have an estimate reading.
Now your bill is paid for in half yearly blocks, If the estimate was out and you do not correct it, your bill will be out and high for at least six months. The bill is the average of the last two readings, and so the cycle begins.
The guide for the 2 person occupation has a high limit of £469 per six months, I have found that the estimated bill automatically pushes you toward that high end (guilty until proved innocent tactics).
Also be aware if you can not read your meter, it will take Thames Water 15 days to come out and read it. So bare in mind you would like your meter readings in around the 1st of June and the 1st of December, you will have to raise the call at least three week before those dates.
To be honest I found after a very frustrating wait to actually speak to someone, the agent from Thames Water was extremely helpful and very concise.0 -
My direct debit increased from £38 a month to £49, and then increased again to £52 after I called to complain! Despite being just 6p in debt, the customer service representative insisted that £52 was correct, even though it was based on my six-month summer consumption, which included watering my gardens!
I've used 116,755 litres of water in the last 12 months, which rounded up to 117 m³, means I needed to pay £39.26 a month. I offered to pay £40, but to no avail.
The answer to this intransigence is to activate the nuclear option and cancel your direct debit and pay twice yearly—which did leave the call centre employee dumbfounded, but they confirmed my next bill would be in June 2025. The money that they could have had languishing in their accounts will now be held in my Tandem account, earning 4.65% interest.

I got a man coming for water reading 2 days ago.
today I received a bill that shows my normal (very low) usage, and I was less than 10% underpaying, but they are increasing my monthly bill by 25% from February!
are they trying to upfront most of the increase they have been allowed over the next 5 years onto the 1st year?
I really don't understand why water is private in this country (and almost nowhere else), it has no competition possible and is literally an essential!
