Yet.....my annual snowboarding trip which I sort out separately remains roughly the same.

The cynic in me detects something's going on!

Have you tried DIY'ing the tour operator holiday?  How much did it cost arranging independently against the tour operators?
    I have. Same story.
So it's unlikely that there's "something going on" with the tour operators if DIYing it doesn't save any money they're just passing on increased costs. A combination of many factors, recession, inflation, uncertainty in markets, softening of demand, global events etc

Yet my snowboarding trip is same or less (self arranged).

I agree tho, it's a number of factors. But I think a lot of it is increased flight costs. My said snowboarding trip is the same as I bagged early flight tickets at £80 a flight which are now £450.

Summer flights for 2025 seem high in comparison. But yes hotel costs are up.

Maybe there was a post COVID dip to encourage tourism to grow.

That said, last year we bagged an all inc in Sharm for £1100 (in school hols) and were sat next to another couple who paid £2000!

We had always done self-catering, often flats or holiday houses and avoided all-inclusive. Winter sun is of interest and my parents regularly went to Tenerife, but again we didn't fancy it.

Coming out of covid, winter 21/22 we were cautious about returning to holiday, and booked a week in Tenerife, paying around £1300 all-inclusive. We were amazed at how good it was, the food was much better than I expected, and the service was also very good. The following winter we went back and paid £2200 for 10 days. We thought that was pushing the boat out, but we had enjoyed the first one so much that we thought it was worth it.

Last winter that had risen to £3000 for the same hotel and we did a much cheaper self arranged holiday in Malta, which was a great experience, different, so difficult to compare, but possibly better. We had a lovely flat with a balcony overlooking a harbour / marina.

This year that inflation has calmed a bit - 10 days in Tenerife in February would be around £3200, but it still is more than we think it would be worth. The over-tourism protests in Tenerife probably influence us as well.

That initial holiday in Tenerife was possibly discounted to get people back. It certainly sucked us in. However inflation creates what is known as 'demand destruction' people either stop buying or can't afford to buy until supply and demand finds its own balance.

Flight prices seem to have rocketed over the past couple of years.  Flights I paid £800 for in 2023 are showing as over £1200 for the same dates and airport in 2025.

    Thought I'd check myself...

Honeymoon booked in March 2023 for £3,326.79, looking at it for March 2025 - £4,951.79!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    That's nearly 50% in 2 years  :open_mouth:

That's consistent with what I'm seeing.

I think maybe my expectations need to change!

Bizarrely, long haul now doesn't look so expensive!

Week all inc in the med for £3,000 v week all inc in Dubai/Cancun/Dominican Republic etc for £3,400. Hmmmmm.

Update...checked emails. 2023 Algarve all inc £1500. Same hotel next year £3600.

For the kind of prices you are paying I'd rather have a staycation and enjoy my own environment. Bliss!!

Holidays are a luxury that I can dispense with. Heating however is not.

@Rosa_Damascena I don't know about others, but I feel so much better for having the sun on my back for a couple of weeks that the financial situation would need to be pretty bad for me not to find a way to go away each year.

I would love that!  Unfortunately finances don't allow it for us either - our last holiday abroad was in 2013 and our last UK break was in 2015.
Prices for a UK holiday now are extortionate too......over £700 for 3 nights in a log hut?  Um, no thanks!

Well there's over tourism in many places so people are willing and able to pay the prices.
I have to say that living in a tourist area we have been overwhealmed by tourists this year so its not just abroad.
I've travelled the world on worked out good bargains pre covid. Now, with no fixed prices, no high street companies, no brochures it's nigh on impossible to find those. And the miserable experience of airports and airlines, the rising of insurance these days my own country seems preferable. So much to see without the hassle.

I can rise and shine - just not at the same time!
