what a lovely idea!:T well done for doing this!:T

I also do this. In the summer I went up a few days a week and I walked 5 dogs for about half an hour each - young fit dogs so i had to walk fast. Great exercise and sooo good for those dogs to get out of kennels. The staff do a great job but they just don't have time for long walks. Then it's lovely to have a slow plod along with an oldie who just wants time to sniff the grass. Thanks for the prompt with this - I have been using the excuse that i'm busy with work but i could still manage at least one weekend walk most weekends.#

£53 a week for food How I wish, my food bill uncluding washing powder etc averages £25................lots of ideas on here, go through the recipes and you will find lots of ideas.

There are 2 of us and we eat well......we do have an allotment and we are just coming to the end of the first sowing of leeks, but we have more coming on and also 9 cabbages which will kep is going for quite a time.

    Menu for this week............

Tonight - Home made quiche with creamed spuds and baked beans.Pudding remains of undays apple and rhubarb crumble

Wednesday - Macoroni cheese with baked spuds and tomatoes. - Creme Caramel will also do tomorrow.

Thursday - Bacon omlette with Salad

Friday - HM Fish and Chips - Bread and butter pudding,

    Saturday - Liver and sausage - remains of B & B pudding

Sunday Roast Chicken (this will also give me 2 suppers for next week and also stock form the carcass for soup) Apple and blackberry tart.

Lunch varies, sandwiches, cheese and biscuits, soup, beans on toast, cheese on toast etc.........we have fresh fruit after lunch and I do some sort of dessert after supper, this can last us up to 3 nights.

OK I am at home all day now, but I had 4 children and worked full time and the menus were very much the same as we have now.........its a question of organisation, and menu planning. I only shop once a month for groceries, every second week on the market for fruit and any veg we might need.

Csarina - your menu sounds yummy! and you do it so cheaply!:T I cook from scratch etc but still seem to spend too much - about £60 for 3 of us with 4 of us at weekends. My aim for 2008 is to lessen this!

ok quick question i normally shop at asda but am going to try somewhere new this week and want to spend as little as possible i have a Lidl and Aldi nearby but don't know which is better what do you guys think?

Patchwork cat..do you have enough food to last til then? anything in the freezer? how many of you are there?

I used to do the same, was a real ASDA gal. Im trying now just to go there for basics, Ive been goin to Lidl for fruit & veg, they claim 70% cheaper, its nicer as well. Bags of onions 20p etc..

It gives me a real satisfaction knowing im shopping around & saving money.

Tip-If you go Lidl/Aldi take your carrier bags from ASDA etc.you pay for them there. Or use any boxes they have there.

  • Hi all

I just wanted to share this but a lot of you will probably know this anyone but it may help one or two (thousand hopefully)

I done all my shopping late Saturday evening. I had no food at home to feed the family and only 50 quid on my pocket to last us the month for food (no, im NOT kidding). Armed with my husband and calculator his job was to add up everything I put in the trolley until it got to £50.

I aimed straight for the reduced section and I was picking up joints of meat at a 3rd of original cost, packets of mice 30p, fresh cream cakes 20p for 2, apple turnovers 20p/2, bread, 30p, pizza 30p reduced from 2.99, casoroles 28p, 3 packs of sausages 50p each, burgers, chicken, pork, beef, colgate toothpaste reduced to 90p, loo roll scented 1/2 price, cereal packs, dog food, cans of custard 5p each (yes really!!) ambrosia semolina 16p from £1..................... Cans of soup £16p each I ended up getting 10 bag fulls for just short of £50. A lot of it can be frozen. So now I have a months worth for £50. My freezer in jammed full. I do check the dates first before it goes into the trolly just to make sure it has a bit more shelf life. I would have imagined this lot would have cost over £100 otherwise.

I can just assume they were getting rid of loads of stock because of closure on New Years day.

Dont forget Supersavers for reduced priced washing powder / tea bags etc. I find Bold is sometimes £1 or more cheaper in here compared to Tesco
Im happy. Hubbys happy, Son happy.

    Happy new year to everyone.

I use both Lidl and Aldi, both good for different things, subejct to taste.

Fruit/Veg cheapest at Lidl. Lidl has some normal branded products on offer, Aldi tend to have their own, but the quality is good. I like Aldi Baked Beans, I also buy their long life skimmed milk, which seems to have no after taste. Their fresh orange juice is yummy but not the cheapest. My son and his gf like their Pasta sauces, some is long life and some fresh. Cereals from either depending on what is available the Apple Crunch from Aldi is good when it is in and the Wellness Flakes with Chocolate from Lidl. Yogurts good from Aldi, plus the value packets of sliced meat.

Unfortunately it is always personal taste, just keep trying.

I use Aldi quite a bit, the Lidl we have here is not a pleasant shop, last year it was closed by the health people they found mice droppings in both the store rooms and the shop, really put me off!!!!!

I use Mr T's, its just under 1 mile from where we live, whilst the nearest Adsa is 4.5 miles, we can get to Tesco on the bus if we need to although we do take the car when we do the monthly shop. Aldi is also just over 4 miles so I only go there if I need a lot from there.

This would probably would be very easy. (Assuming you're not a veggie)

I have just challanged myself with £40 (Asda online), to do it for me DH and 3 kids 9, 4, and almost 3. I managed to get it to get to just under £36 assuming you need most things, for a week, and some of the stuff I listed buy probably would last into the second week.

Although there is veg, fruit, and dairy there isnt anywhere near to what I would normaly buy weekly (we can very easy got though 2/3 hands of bananas a week)and most items are the value range but when you're countig every penny needs must.

    So anyway I have managed:

    treats/snacks
packet lunches for DH and DS1
    Fruit and veg
    Dairy
    Cleaning products
    shampoo, soap, toothpaste
    Breakfast, lunch and tea.

I can post the list ect if anyone wants a nose lol.

    QP
    Grocery Challenge. £400. - £35.22 + £19.80 + £109.01 = £164.03
    Other spends (Clothes Luxuries etc)£11.97 + £1.19 + £7.36 + £69.00 + £38.50 + £5.50 + £23.00 +£2.00 = £158.52:shocked::sad:
  • It might involve spending a small amount of money but you could try an outing to an area with lots of charity shops and pick up a board game (scrabble wouldn't be dumb!) or a jigsaw to do together. Could be a good time now with people de-cluttering after Xmas etc and you can pick up some really nice stuff for £1 or so. I had 2 outings with the kids over the xmas holidays to an area near us full of charity shops and they had a great time poking through the games even though they'd had loads for xmas.
