Amazon charge

Amazon have emailed me to say that they are charging me for an item that they did not get back. They already paid out the refund whilst item was in transit.
However, as they claim they did not get item back, they are charging my original payment method.
The issue here is that Royal mail tracking shows that the item was returned to Amazon. Have even sent them screenshots via Twitter(X) of the RM delivery status.
I have had numerous chats to Amazon "customer services" who each time say "you will not be charged for the item". Yet, email arrived today saying they are charging me!
Upon checking my credit card company account online there is sure enough a pending transaction for the cost of the item.
Clearly the Amz CServ people don't know what they are doing, so what should I do now? Any ideas? Item was £22.00

  • Keep talking to them.  There's clearly been an administrative error.

You could speak to your card company to see if they'll intervene but you'll need to weigh up how far to push this for £22.  Amazon could choose to close your account if you exercise a chargeback.  Personally, for the sake of £22 I would exhaust the customer service chat and write it off of it doesn't get resolved.

'The issue here is that Royal mail tracking shows that the item was returned to Amazon. Have even sent them screenshots via Twitter(X) of the RM delivery status.'

RM tracking might show that a package was delivered to Amazon. It does not show the contents.

To clarify, are Amazon saying they have not received anything, or that an item was missing?

When did you send the package back? It is hard for us to comprehend the sheer scale of the number of items returned every hour, let alone every day (I know people who work at the gigantic warehouse near Edinburgh where all UK returns go). It can take some time to reconcile some returns with their order, especially when the packaging arrives damaged which is not uncommon.

Amazon just simply kept saying "item in transit" on my account. Emails saying not returned but CServ saying they had item & I wouldn't be charged. My return was sent to a South West Amaz centre so I'm figuring Amaz send their returns there in house. Package sent back end Aug. Arrived 31 Aug 24. Appreciate what you say about contents of said parcel but when CS say they have it & you won't be charged & then when Amz send email saying will be charged its obvious something is amiss!
  • Hello OP

Might be worth writing an old fashioned letter to Amazon's UK head office address, some posters in the past have reported getting a positive response by doing this.

Funnily enough that was definitely in my thoughts. I have had further CServ contact by using Twitter (X) & am awaiting email response

    This ^^^

You need to clarify with amazon what they are saying.  Are they saying they have received nothing at all from you, or are they saying they've received a package, but it doesn't contain what it should contain?

If the former, you have tracking to prove something was delivered, but if the latter, you have no proof of what was delivered.

    OK.

For future reference, you've inadvertantly introduced confusion by using the phrase "credit card company account" which implies that it's a company or business card rather than a consumer or personal account.

Better just to say credit card account.

It can make a difference as to the remedies available to you and therefore the replies you get...

On reflection I would actually say best just to say Credit card. As in "a charge to my credit card"
