It is perfectly usual for airlines not to refund non-refundable tickets, Ryanair are not alone in this.Amusingly a couple of years back I had a Dr's 'don't fly letter and we'd booked TUI out and EZY backTUI refunded me in full when I emailed the Dr's note but EZY just returned the APDClaimed off insurance but it was within the excess!!!!0 -

Unfortunately the week before I was admitted to hospital and kept in for 5 days.On leaving the consultant told me I was unable to travel abroad. It was stated on my discharge letter also.I called Ryanair who said they would not refund the cost of the flights (£535) and I also have since tried the credit card company I paid with. They also declined to repay me.
Is there anything else I can do?They have received copies of the Hospital letter but totally ignore it.
I believe this was out of my control and I should at least been offered a credit voucher for use in the future for that amount.
It's a travel insurance claim.0 -

Looks like J B was observing that the refund from Easyjet was less than the travel policy claim excess.Bemused might have been a better choice of words ?1

Ryanair could dispute the charge and reclaim it , but they don’t.
What they do is keep the debt on record and if you book another flight with Ryanair that amount will be an outstanding debt which they will deduct from any payment you make , leaving you unable to travel until you pay it.Just an update guys as I am now home from Malaga and I flew back with RyanAir! LOLI had just booked with them and by the way I never had to pay the £45 back before I could proceed when I just a few minutes later finally got a reply from Dawid who works for them see below. He confirmed what I thought. It would be a terrible business decision to try and claim the £45 back when booking with them as this would now push the price up into the realm of other operators and It could be a good while until I flew with Ryanair again if ever!Reply from Dawid,Dear Mr Jones,
We refer to your recent correspondence dated 15/10/2024.
Please be advised that we have no records or any information that once you will try to make any purchase we will try to charge you back for the amount of 44.99 GBP.
Yours sincerely,Dawid B.
