I stayed in a hotel right next to Oriente railway station. You can get a train from there out to Sintra.
Opposite the station is a good shopping centre called Vasco de Gama and they have lots of food outlets for a quick meal.

Forgot to mention that they have a gondola ride along the waterfront which is good fun. It's a bit like a ski lift on a horizontal wire.1
