You are disposing of what may well be the single most valuable asset you have so you may wish to use a firm that is efficient, thorough and has experienced dedicated staff for the task. I have always used proper law firms to protect my interest although since it's quite possible to do your own conveyancing without qualification, this has led to a large number of conveyancing factories to pop up over the last two decades.
For me, cost effective means protecting my interests and doing the job quickly and correctly. Sadly that triangle of cheap/good/fast applies here as well (ie you can't ever have all three).
Signature on holiday for two weeks1 -
Reminds of when I get customers asking for "best price" they always want cheap

We went local, found 3 in our area, went with the mid priced one as we were recommended it by family. Worked out fine, and being local we could drop in to leave or collect paperwork etc.2

The 'cheap' conveyancing warehouses can be fine fr straight-forward transactions/no complications. They will undertake each step (usually an admin assistant)and tick it off.But if an issue arises (even simple ones) they either can't cope or will do so very slowly as the admin assistant refers it to a solicitor who is 'over-seeing' 00s of transactions.0

as the saying goes, you can have it done right, done cheap or done fast. But not all three at once.I’ve always found personal recommendations to be best, or seeing the person and making your mind up otherwise.0

I always used a local (to me) solicitor for conveyancing, maybe cost more, maybe not - I never got any other quotes, I was happy with the work and all got sorted very smoothly - 5 transactions in the last 6 years - looking at other people's figures since appears I also got a good deal.
Thinking about though - the real time never to skimp is in buying - that is when you want a really proactive conveyancer not to miss anything and stride on through the process1 -
Ditto Flugelhorn. Our family solicitor is a conveyancer too, so I always just go to him and he costs what he costs. However that isn't advice for everyone - get 3 quotes + get personal recommendations etc is better advice in general.
By the by - my sol was cheaper than my EA. Not right isn't that.I don't wanna shut up, I want a 7up and a 10p mix-up.0 -
I used a few online firms and they were very poor. Cheap = poor. I had to take one to the ombudsman. You pay for what you get. I found a legal firm 10 miles from me who were reasonable and had an office I could go into and bang on the desk. That worked.
Whatever the firm, they take on too much work and then struggle with backlogs.
They also play a game where they exchange and complete on the same day. Saves them time but at your lack of protection for the sale to go through........imho.......0
