EDF Smart meter not working - need to change supplier

Hi everyone,

Not sure if anyone has any answer to this question, but here it goes.
My EDF Smart meter is not working, it has not been for over 2 years and EDF is absolutely useless. Once they even pretended they will come and fix it, we turned our life upside down to accomodate engineer visit on 12 hour notice and they never came.. disgusting behaviour really, but I digress.

So now I need to change supplier now my fix is at the end. I would like to go to Octopus and ideally go with tracker or agile, but you have to go to variable tariff first according to the blurb. After few weeks you can request to be changed to tracker or agile. This, however, requires Smart meter..

When applying for supplier change, can I tell them I do not have one? As the one we have is out of action? I do not want to get into the situation where I tell them I have one and when it comes to changing to agile tariff they say they cannot connect to it and delay the swap over by trying and putting me in a queue for repair.. I would rather they just sent me new one

Thoughts, opinions please?
Thank you

  • Is the smart meter not working at all - ie not recording use? Or is it just not sending the readings to the supplier? If the former, I think you will need to have it sorted first before changing supplier as they are presumably billing you on estimated readings. If the latter though then I would suggest a transfer to Octopus might give you a far better chance at getting  the meter changed over.  Does the meter still communicate with the In House Display, or not at all?

New suppliers would  all know the present meter type and serial number at your property plus what your annual usage is if you applied to be a customer  They may not know if it's a working smart meter

The issue had displayed itself by the In house display not displaying itself :-) The in house display was not working - not showing any readings. Just flashing wifi signal.
EDF had lied to me and said that is the only issue, they are receiving - and then 6 months later I received estimated bill with warning that I did not send in meter readings!!
So basically the whole thing is useless and now disconnected.
I since regularly send in meter readings, including up to 31st August, so I do have annual estimate and everything.

    So the meter does work?

It is just the in home display that doesn't?

    No, nothing works.
I send in meter readings by physically reading them and logging them on online

Slight side note, but if EDF arranged an appointment and did not turn up, they should be paying you £30. Put in a complaint.

Where do you read them from?

If the meter isn't working  by recording your usage how do you send readings, I don't understand?

So the meter is "working" in that it is recording usage, but its not sending the data to EDF. Correct?

I'd just start the move to Octopus (get a friend or relative to refer you and you'll get £50 credit each). Hopefully Octopus will get the automatic sending of readings fixed. But, its not guaranteed they will be able to.
  • For what it's worth, I had a smart meter installed by EDF and the smart meter display they provided never worked. Fast forward 6 months of whatsapp customer support back and forth, I was none the wiser.

I contacted Ofgem and within 1 month, I had £100 credit, new smart meter and a written apology. My case worked was brilliant and of course it's not their first rodeo either! My recommendation is to not let them get away with failing to provide you a service that they have signed you up for.
