I know that this is all probably way over my head but I haven't really got a choice if I want to sort it out - I don't know anyone else that can help - you guys have been a saviour, although unfortunately I may be returning for help when I get the new router....:o
If I did choose to link the PC and PS3 to the router, do I use ethernet connections for both? Just checking in case I can't get the wireless bit to work!...
Yes you use an ethernet cable for both - in this case both straight ( also known as patch ) cables.
A crossover cable can be found from here is you're interested;

Any good PC shop should also have them.0 -
Thanks jem - I must admit I only really want to access the internet to download some more songs from the singstore online (wouldn't admit that to everyone!) and I guess if OH wants to try online gaming occasionally so I didn't want to spend a lot of money - not much left after Christmas!
My study is next to the lounge so one of those cables at 10m should do it - so I will try that option first as it seems a lot cheaper.....if not I guess its down the new router option
Many thanks to you all for your help once again....:o0 -

They do if they don't want to buy a router.0 -
When you do get the new router,take it one step at a time!Don't try to do it all at once.I would first of all get your internet working with the router using a cable.Then get the ps3 working with a cable.If all goes well,you can then try to connect the PC wirelessly,then the ps3 wirelessly.Have a strong drink at your side just in case,then you can always come back on here for help.0

It's worth a try first if you don't want to spend too much money.
Personally for ease of use I would go with a router although that can have its problems if you don't know how to set it all up.
I was at the same stage you are at about 10 years ago and it was hard work finding out about things. There wasn't a site such as this for help. I used Sygate Home Network for sharing my connection back then.
Nowadays I have a router which allows 3 PCs, 2 Xboxes, 1 PS3 and 2 laptops to connect - mixture of wired and wireless.
Come back if you get stuck.0
