To start the internet sharing you need to on the PC go:-

Start > Connect to > Show all connections

You will then get a Network Connections Window yhere should be one under a subheading Broadband and will probably be called the name of your ISP.

Right click on the icon and select Properties

Go to the Advanced Tab and tick the "Allow other network users to connect though this computers internet connection" box tick ok and restart you computer.

You should then be able to get online with your PS3 however your PC will need to be on and connected to the internet.

Also one thing make sure the cable you got is a crossover cable.

  • Thanks guys - it all helps....

The cable I was sold was just listed as a "Network Gaming Hook-up cable" and looking at the back it says that it's a straight through cable and hence the wrong one. Also the AOL guy said not to log in to the internet through the compter - so thanks for letting me know that isn't the case.

I will go back tomorrow and see is I can find the other one - thanks ever so much for your help - as you may have gathered I wouldn't have had a clue.

I will let you know tomorrow how it goes......fingers crossed!

  • One last question - when I go online to look at what's available, there seem to be masses of different ones out there - do I have to get a particular one for this to work? It doesn't look like I can get one in a "normal" computer shop.....

I would go down the wireless route. That way you can have the PS3 in another room, bedroom, etc, without wires trailing everywhere.Just get a wireless router, the PS3 is all ready set up for it.As an aside, don't forget the PS3 controller can be used wirelessly-the cable's only needed to charge it.
  • Okay Mike - if I buy a wireless router is that it? Do I just swap it over from my old modem? Do I need to load it as a new device on my computer and then away to go?

Where do the cables fit in then if you are using a wireless router- is it one "Normal" ethernet cable from the PS3 to the PC and then the USB cable from the PC to the router? I assume the router has a DSL port to connect to the phone line then - is that right?
  • Thanks ts_aly2000 - my message crossed yours!

If I get this sort of router, do I need to keep this ethernet cable I already have? Does it come with everything else I need too?

    Thanks again..

No,you will have to set up your AOL internet with it first.

If your going wireless there's no cable needed from the ps3 to the router. You then have to choose between having your PC connected either wirelessly or with a cable.
I assume the router has a DSL port to connect to the phone line then - is that right?
    Yup,just plug in.
  • Okay looks like I am off to Play.com to get the Netgear DG834GT.

I know that this is all probably way over my head but I haven't really got a choice if I want to sort it out - I don't know anyone else that can help - you guys have been a saviour, although unfortunately I may be returning for help when I get the new router....:o

If I did choose to link the PC and PS3 to the router, do I use ethernet connections for both? Just checking in case I can't get the wireless bit to work!...

Even if you do change that cable for a crossover, where are you going to plug it in? The 105 doesn't have any RJ45 ports.

The crossover cable came about when Internet Connection Sharing was mentioned.

If that method was used then a crossover cable was needed to connect the PC to the PS3. As they were sold a straight cable this was why ICS wasn't working even though AOL tried to guide them through it.

I agree that a router is a better option but ICS should work too with the correct cable.
