Ethernet cable for PS3

Hi all,

I am a complete novice to all this gaming lark so please be gentle! OH had a PS3 for Christmas. Went to Game today to buy ethernet cable to get online and they gave us an Xbox ethernet cable saying they are all the same.

Cannot get connected online - keeps saying onscreen to check our network connections. Phoned AOL who spent 40mins checking our connections etc and said that we would have to phone Sony to sort out - anybody have any ideas what we are doing wrong please? We have just connected the ethernet cable from the PS3 to our computer - is there anything else I should be doing?!

Any help would be gratefully received! Many thanks,

Hope everyone had a good Christmas and a happy New Year

You will need to either share the internet connection on the computer using internet sharing so that the PS3 can also use it or buy a router which will share the connection for you.
  • You need to plug the other end into the router but try going wireless. I do not recommend internet connection sharing (for tons of reasons) Certainly "just plugging into the pc" you may just as well drop the cable into a goldfish bowl ! (joking). I would ask a friendly neighbours kid in to help (not joking)
You do not say how your BB connection is achieved, that will start.
  • you got dial up or broadband or what?

What type of modem / router do you have? Does it have wireless and/or ethernet ports in the back?
Space for rent, apply within - Free trial on Thanks button though
  • Hi all - thanks for the input but a lot of it does seem in a foreign language!

Have broadband connection through a BT Voyager 105 USB ADSL Modem. The other end of the ethernet does not plug into here - the only place I can see that it plugs in is in my PC.

I thought all I needed to do was connect the ethernet cable directly to my PC as I don't need both the computer and the PS3 connected online at the same time - is that right? Do I have to get a router then?

What's this wireless lark then? Can I do this from the PS3 - I have wired broadband for my normal connection....

Don't know whether I have made any sense or not - sorry dense or what!

OK you have broadband but just have a modem and not a router.

Connecting the PS3 to your PC does not allow you to access the internet which is what you need to get the PS3 online. Unfortunately it looks like the Voyager 105 only has USB and not ethernet connections.

What you need to do is use Internet Connection sharing from the PC (not necessarily recommended) or buy a modem/router to reaplce the Voyager 105. You would then need to set up the router with your AOL user name/password. The use one ethernet cable from the router to the PC and one to the PS3.
  • Thanks Jem, that makes sense even to me!

You say that I can use Internet Connection sharing on my PC, although not recommended - does it cause problems then? Is it easy to do or too difficult for me to attempt?!

If I have to buy a router or another modem - any suggestions on what to get? Is there anything in particular I need to look for? Do I then have to buy another ethernet cable as well?

    Many thanks again.

I have not used it for a long time and it wasn't all that stable. However that was in Windows 98 days. I believe Windows XP is much better for sharing.

Try it and see what happens. Start up Network Setup Wizard in Control Panel and follow the instructions to share your connection. If it works then great. If it doesn't then see about a router. You may however need a different type of ethernet cable, usually called crossover cable.

    What you need is an ADSL Modem/Router - Netgear is often recommended. They usually come with setup CDs and will help you through the setup. You will need to know your username and password for AOL. Something like this one for wireless;

You can get these wired or wireless ( wireless routers also have wired ports ). If you use wired then you would need two ethernet cables, one for your PC and one for the PS3. If you go for a wireless router then you will just need one cable for the PC.
  • Thanks Jem,

I think the AOL guy tried to do the Network Setup Wizard but there was still no joy.....is the computer supposed to automatically detect whether it is the computer or PS3 that needs access after that?

If the Network Setup Wizard has worked, do I still need to be able to connect my ethernet cable to the modem? If so (and I obviously can't) then it looks like I have to buy either a new router or modem anyway.......or maybe this crossover ethernet cable....

Wireless is a bit confusing to be honest..at least I know what is connected to what when I can see the cables! So I am guessing, one ethernet from my PS3 to the new modem/router and another from my PC to the modem!

    Sorry for being dull....

Haven't used the XP one but from what i can see the Wixard should detect that you are connecting to the internet from your local PC. It would then share that connection through your network card. This is where the ethernet cable attaches - it will have to be a crossover cable and you may have been sold a straight ( also called patch) cable. If so it won't work.

No you would connect the PC to the PS3 as you have done. However I suspect it is the wrong cable you have.

The modem/router will come with one ethernet cable usually. So one cable from router to PC and one cable from router to PC. The other cable is the ADSL cable into your phone socket.

Wireless isn't that difficult but will require passkeys to keep it secure. Wired is better if you don't mind the wires.
