arrrghhhhhhhhh - this is getting worse - i have a blooming toolbar at the top of the page and one at the bottom - both have a cross so you can turn them off yet that doesnt work.........so annoyed now but i will crack this - will try the system restore turn off thingy now........0

Before you run AVG in safe mode (and the other things) put them on your desktop. I had one trojan where when I went into safe mode I couldn't access my antivirus and had to go back to normal to put it on the desktop.Torgwen..........

well - i tried all the scans i could find/registry cleaners and that and then had a thought it could be internet explorer cos i realised it only happened when i used that - so, i uninstalled it and installed firefox - no trouble since - not one popup.........0

Look in your add/remove progs and look for
'name'toolbar - You may have more than one, remove them all. Using firefox isnt really a fix. The problem will still be on your p.c, thus still affecting it (eating up RAM, using bandwidth etc)
Download hijackthis and run a scan. Copy the log into here.0 -
thanks t4 - i did what you suggested and then looked all the way down it using the list - nothing is on there that shouldnt be - thanks............i also checked the toolbar list earlier before i deleted the firefox - and yes, there was a toolbar on there that shouldntve been - forgot about that bit - removed it..........
thanks0 -
Turning off system restore before the virus/trojan etc is fixed is not a good idea - the reason being is that if you botch a fix you have nothing to roll back to. IMHO it is better to roll back to a virus/trojan etc than having to reformat because you deleted an important file.
Only when you are confident that you are clean should you flush the temp folders and restore points.0 -

If you remove a Virus when system restore is turned on then system restore will 'backup' the virus and allow it to be re-introduced.
I've run without system restore for:-
Operating System: (WinXP Professional 5.1 Service Pack 2 (Build #2600)) ¤ Installed: (XP was installed 56wks 2days 18hrs 19mins 2secs ago)
It is quite good for getting your computer out of sticky situations, but so is safe mode. System restore decreases your HDD performance when turned on.0 -
I agree, almost all the systems I fix for people show the virus/trojan in the restore point, turning off system restore is the only sure wayEx forum ambassador
