Ryanair outrageous charge for 2 cabin bags

Unfortunately Ryanair is the only one flying to Biarritz . I had no choice .
flight is £160 (expensive already ) plus £70 for  the bags .

Is that direct or with a stop? You'd probably get more carrier choice with a stop, but it would take longer and it wouldn't necessarily be cheaper than Ryanair's flight ticket + bags. 

Can you travel hand luggage only? I (personally) travel hand luggage only for trips of up to two weeks, and have a specific backpack for this, which fits perfectly into an overhead locker.

I travel with check in twice a year, in order to take Christmas gifts, and return to the UK.

*I have never flown with Ryanair, and would actively avoid them, having read all the horror stories.

likewise. They've always got me where I needed to go. I travel to Norway often. Sometimes BA are cheaper than Ryanair (after factoring in luggage costs), sometimes not.

I managed to to a full week's trip with just the "under the seat included bag" this year. Using packing cubes you can get a lot of stuff into a small bag!

If you check everything [in], why are you concerned about the cost of cabin bags?

And if Ryanair didn't operate direct flights from your UK airport of choice to Biarritz, you'd presumably still have found a way of getting there, so there are choices, even if less convenient?

Yes you did, but it was all bundled up into a single price so you couldn't choose to forgo it and get a cheaper price. Now you get the cheaper price but can add on extras if you need them. 

Where are you flying from? If London then EasyJet also fly there or you have non-direct options if elsewhere or fly to San Sebastian which is about 20km away

For those who travel often with Ryanair, do they generally strictly enforce their bag limits?  I flew with them recently for the first time in ages and was a bit concerned that my carry-on bag was larger than the 40X20X25 size that they stipulate (but could still go easily under the seat).

But on neither the outgoing nor return flight was anyone seemingly bothered about what was being carried on.  I think I could even have had a bag large enough for the overhead locker without having paid for that.  I'm not suggesting anyone tries this, but I'm just curious whether my experience was typical.

not necessarily . I remember flying to NY in the late 90s early 2000s for under £200 , I didn't have to pay for bag or seat.

Yes you did. 

As previous posters have said the cost of your bag & seat was included in the price. 

It is only the introduction of low cost airlines to the market that they started charging for your luggage, seat, food or to use the toilet.

You may find that long haul flights have started charging for extras. I fly to New York on a regular basis and the last time I went, BA wanted to charge me £80 for seat selection or free 24 hours before the flight.

This is what the OP is saying costs £35 each way. Seems the OP would be happy to put their luggage into the overhead locker but is being charged a lot to do it.

Yes on Ryanair that is the case. Included in the fare is one small bag which must fit under the seat. A traditionally cabin case size which is included on same airlines is not on Ryanair.

However this is all clearly stated in the booking process.
