Alternative to paper backup?

Options
I see some people carry a paper copy of their airline boarding passes in case something goes wrong with their mobile.
Is there a simple device that would act as an electronic backup?
It would only need facilities to store and display files, and a physical connection to get the files onto the device.
Without any internet facilities it would be a simple, more reliable device.

Is there any such device, or something that could be used in this way?

I download the boarding pass onto my phone so Internet connection not needed but I do make a paper copy as well. 🤣
  • I take a screenshot of all documents and keep them in a folder on my phone.  Just make sure that my phone is charged!!

A basic/old phone? Ultimately it needs to be something with a screen so you can show them it and not sure there exists a cheaper option like a thumb drive with screen.

Technically we normally have phones each and an iPad and all boarding cards on all devices so chances of all three failing is small.
  • I keep an old phone charged up and download boarding passes, rail tickets and other essential apps (banking apps etc) just in case have my phone stolen or lose/damage it.

I do quite a bit of solo travelling so don't even have the safety net of being able to use a partner's phone to recover documents.

For each trip I donwload the apps I might use if needed (Austrian Trains, Flix Bus, British Airways, Booking.com etc) and have a reasonably foolproof backup

Google Wallet (I assume something similar for Apple) can hold and display tickets without needing internet connections.

I suspect a device just for boarding passes is in the same class as cookers with PIN codes :o

  • Airline boarding passes and concert/theatre tickets are the two things I still carry paper copies of.

Pretty much any other pass/ticket/document I'm happy I can sort out access or source a duplicate given time but aeroplanes/gigs are not waiting for me to fanny about.
  • The device I described could have many uses, boarding passes was just one example.
In the absence of a device for saving and displaying files, would a basic tablet be more suitable than a mobile?

  • Thinking about it, what's being described by OP is pretty much what a PDA was designed to do, until that Steve Jobs destroyed the World as we know it....

Here's the one I had (still have somewhere), never quite replaced my Filofax

We carry paper boarding passes to save the hassle of using our phones - just fold it up and put it in our passports (which we also don't have on our phones! ;) )
