Lodger for 17 years now a problem

As a landlord myself, who rarely agrees with tenants ... after 17 years I'd have to say 6 months notice would be reasonable.

No, but if they could put up with each other for 17 years then six months longer with an end in sight would surely be manageable. I wouldn't be too fussed over the timeframe, not worth falling out over. If the landlord wanted the tenant out quickly I think he'd have set a deadline rather than just an open comment.
