New Laptop Wanted - HELP

Options
Hey,

Sorry, it's my yearly thread. I'm clueless with tech hence asking the experts on here.

Last year I got an ASUS Zenbook 14 Oleo. It's lasted a full year but it's heating like crazy and it's very whirry. I liked how good the battery was on it though. Thanks for the suggestions.

I want something similar.
I'm happy to spend about £1000 to £1500.
I'm wanting a long battery life and something that runs quietly.
A touch screen would be nice.
I will be using it for emails, some work and some Microsoft Office and some YouTube.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm useless at PC World, they tell me everything is good and just buy whatever which is of no use to me.

Thanks for your help,

The fan on this device looking at the pictures suggests its a typical design that's prone to  dust build-up and that's what causes the fan to go crazy and the device to get hot.

If that's the case that just needs clearing out and it'll be good for another year.

It would help if you told us what the laptop is going to be used for. £1000 would get a good gaming laptop, for example

Why are your laptops only lasting a year? I've had a Lenovo laptop which cost around £750 new for 3 years, and it's great! I don't have huge gaming / video / streaming needs though - mostly use it for browsing and studying.

I'd look to see if the fan is blocked with dust etc., as it sounds like that might be part of the problem.

Depending on what “some work” covers then £1000 is way more than you would need

In addition to clearing out the fan so it can cool itself are you operating it on a cushion, duvet, carpet etc as that might tend to block the ventilation slots and cause it to overheat

Sorry everyone. By work I mean emails, doing some excel spreadsheets and word documents and using LinkedIn and another website for which is for checking documents.

I also use it for YouTube and watching some Netflix. I don't play games on it.

I sometimes have the laptop on my legs or in bed on a cushion but mostly on a table. I did try to hoover the vents but it made no difference. A while ago I had the laptop on a cushion in bed and I fell asleep but that was a few months ago. Maybe that's why it's knackered?

Maybe I'm a bit backwards but I thought the more you spent, the better it would be and the longer it would last.

I've not used this one much. There's no wear and tear on it. It's just recently it's started over heating. It was a year and 10 days after I bought it so I think it's out of guarantee. Oh well.

    Any suggestions?

I think you need to undo the case to properly clean it out.

If you do go for a new one, I'd suggest a minimum of a 1920x1080 screen resolution (ie. matching HD 1080p video).
Also a minimum of 16GB RAM.

Do you have any suggestions or links? I will try and look it up.

Main thing for me is a quiet laptop and good battery life, and I'm happy to pay whatever. Thanks,

I don't think you need a new laptop.
I think you need to get the cooling fan cleared out first (its not difficult if you know how to do it) and see how you go from there.  You may be surprised.

If it's otherwise generally okay aside from the getting too hot and the fan, you can probably get another year or so for 3-5% of the cost of replacing the unit (assuming you take it somewhere, otherwise its 20mins of your own time).
