Better to get it in writing as would form part of your defence if it goes to court which I personally doubt.Could it be something to do with this? Sky pay BT £600 to end the contract early. Four days later the SKy contract is then closed down.If it goes to court, then because you have a letter from BT saying they account is closed with no outstanding fees, that should be enough.2

I'm sorry - I should have been clearer in follow up comments - I wrote initially "I" for ease of explanation - I am in fact, a Volunteer Community Support Worker, and helping someone. I went back to edit the post - and it wouldn't let me - so I left it as it was. Apologies. I posted on behalf of the person I am helping - I've been on the phone literally all day today - and a lot of the previous days, to try and find some kind of legal advice, and gather evidence from BT, and talking to my Client, late into the nights, as they themselves are very distressed about it. I am shattered, and feeling the pressure. And that's why my the post first says I - when it's actually my Client - a vulnerable person, in my Community. Apologies. I have posted the corrected version of events on Legal Beagles, as Okell, suggested I should post there.

Get your friend to send a SAR to both Sky and BT to see what information they hold.As per my previous post, still believe there is a bit more to this.0

@JustJinny - debts can be bought and sold but I thought that a debt that has been "sold" is only enforceable in a court of law if it has been legally assigned by the creditor to the purchaser of the debt. This involves a formal legal process which I thought included notification to the debtor - but I might be wrong. (Have they been notified of a debt assignemnt?)
What I suggest you do is one - or preferably all of the first 5 - of the following in this order:
1. Post on the debt subforum here - Debt-free wannabe — MoneySavingExpert Forum - but explain you are creating a duplicate post otherwise people will complain
2. Post on Legal Beagles as I've already suggested in an earlier post Money & Debt - LegalBeagles Forum
3. Post on Consumer Action Group as I've already suggested etc... Debt advice – general issues - National Consumer Service (consumeractiongroup.co.uk)
4. Contact CAB for advice
5. Do a SAR as @powerful_Rogue suggests
6. Lastly and largely optional, some firms of solicitors will offer 30 minutes free advice - but be careful you don't end up signing any agreements with them that might end up costing you more....(This suggestion is likely to be the least useful to you so you can probably omit it)
If you are going to post on another forum be open from the outset that you are not the debtor and explain why you are posting and they aren't. (I assume they're vulnerable or not able to do so for whatever reason). If any part of your story is inconsistent or doesn't make sense others will think you are wasting their time and will decide not to help you...2 -
The reason the CNBC didn't want your (client's) evidence back in 2022 is because evidence only goes with a Witness Statement ... and a WS only happens once a claim is live and a hearing is scheduled.Jenni x1

Thank you so much for all your work in replying and sending links. That's perfect, and I've followed all of your advice.
There was certainly no notification to my Client, about the change of "Debtor". The first they knew of it, was the letter they thought was a scam. Thank goodness it got put on the side pile, and forgotten about, until I asked if they'd had anything at all about any debts before the Court Letter. They are super organised, and keep a lot of paperwork, all in piles that are themselves, organised, going back years, so it was easy to check through it all.
I've tried the Solicitors route, and honestly in all my years of community work, I've never been in a position where no-one has been able to help, or give any advice on what to do about this situation. All the ones I've spoken to thus far, say that it's not something they would take on as it's less than £500. They haven't offered advice either, but said my Client would need to take on a Civil Litigation Solicitor, which Legal Aid wouldn't necessarily cover. Sadly that isn't something my Client is able to do, and they find communication difficult anyway.
I've already rang and spoken to CAB. They couldn't help. After the appointment, all they offered was the Support Through Court, Government Website. They weren't much more help either.
I have written up and posted the SARs now.
Thank you so much for your help. I just don't want anything to go wrong for my Client. They've enough to deal with, in just living, without all this stress on them. I've done McKenzie Friend work in Courts before, and know a fair bit about various other parts of other Law types, but this is not an area I'm familiar with, so it is important to get the right help and advice.
Thanks again for everything. Really appreciated.

Ahhh - I see. Thank you! Never had to deal with a Mediation session like this set-up before, so it's unfamiliar. Now, why couldn't CAB or Support Through Court, have told me that! lol. Thank you!!!!
