Do you pay the same tariff for your electricity at all times of day or are you on Economy 7 or something similar where you get cheaper electricity at certain times, usually cheap overnight electricity.  If you're not sure, check your bill.

No just one tariff although I think that it was split into 2 several years ago, before I changed over to them and the meter was changed

Actually I think that there were 2 tariffs originally when I changed but the second always stayed the same and never went up

My guess is that the main display on the meter shows total electricity used, Tariff 1 plus Tariff 2.  But Octopus is only billing you one of those, Tariff 1 it would seem.  There is probably some historical reason for this, but it makes things very confusing for you.

As you have a smart meter you should not need to give Octopus any readings but if you do, and I am right, then you would need to supply the tariff 1 reading, following the procedure that @BarelySentientAI gave.

So I go back to them and tell them about T01 and T02 and explain what you have said or just let them carry on with their readings please?

I have repeatedly sent them my readings but they won't accept them and I have been trying to sort this out since April

They won't accept your readings because they are so much higher than they are getting.

If they only want the T01 reading, and that is the only one that is going up, then no, you don't owe them money.

If the bills you get keep having smart readings on (not estimates), then just stop giving them your own readings, it is making problems.

Just make sure that you check regularly on your bills that the readings keep saying "smart" or "S" or something like that next to them.  If that ever changes to "estimated" or "E", then you can give them a reading, but give them the T01 number.

And be aware that if you change supplier in the future, there might need to be some discussion around the changeover in case they suddenly decide to use the total instead.
