Sports Direct Refund

Hi all,
I purchased a pair of shoes online from Sports Direct around 2 months ago. They didn't fit so returned them within a few days of receipt. They were returned via InPost and Sports Direct sent me a confirmation email 3 days later saying they had received the package and would issue a refund within 14 days. All standard stuff...
A month passes by - no refund arrives. I contact their customer services via email. They inform me that they require proof that I actually sent the parcel and the courier tracking number. No problem, I pass it on to them.
2 weeks later, they come back with this:
"We have completed a thorough investigation into your claim with both our warehouse and the courier. I can confirm all items ordered were picked and went on through to our quality control area, where it was checked and taken out of your parcel. Our findings also revealed the returned parcel was scanned by the packer, the parcel was opened and the wrong item was taken out.
With this information, I am confident that Incorrect items were received by the warehouse and cannot accept your claim."
I am at a loss here. They effectively have both my money and package. I obviously quizzed them on the matter but they say the decision is final - no refund and no return to me of the package.
What can I do? I am genuinely aghast at this whole ordeal from what was meant to be a simple return. Sorry for the wall of text - there's a lot to get through.
Cheers

Did you return the correct shoes in the correct box to Sports Direct? If you returned in the wrong box then maybe this caused a misunderstanding. In any case, I don't think you'll get anywhere with Sports Direct. Perhaps try a Section 75 claim with your credit card company

Hi, thanks for the reply. Yep, same box, correct packaging. I literally tried them on in the living room then repacked them for return straight away. It does seem like Sports Direct are notoriously difficult to deal with. Wish me luck!0

Did sports direct arrange the return postage, or did you?1

Yes, it was returned via Sports Direct (Instant Returns). They even emailed me to confirm they had received the package and were going ahead with a refund. This is why it's so puzzling.0

What was the value of the shoes?
Did you pay return postage?1 -
£105 plus £5 returns postage. So I'm currently without any shoes or a refund and their customer services are telling me that their decision is final.0
