That one is 2G only and whilst providers won’t turn 2G off until about 2030, they are migrating customers away so that the bandwidth can be redeployed and what’s left used for M2M and IoT.p00hsticks said:
Unless money is tight and/or your or your mother have set your heart on a Nokia I suggest perhaps you look at the Doro range - for example hereKrakkkers said:My mum has asked me to get her a basic mobile and i have found a Nokia 105 4g for £13.50 from ASDA or Argos which would do just fine.
Here is my question, i have only ever had contract phones but my mum want a PAYG phone so when i buy it how do i get credit on it?
Buy SIM Free Doro 1380 Mobile Phone - Black | SIM free phones | Argos
They're designed to be easy to use for those perhaps less mobile-savvy or with poor eyesight, and come with an emergency button on the back that can be programmed to call up to three numbers automatically when pressed.Additionally, Doro is not ideal. They have complicated menus and odd design decisions that can make them hard to use. For example, the phone book on one model doesn’t use a highlight to select the person to call. Instead, the text is made bigger for that contact which results in the list jumping up and down the screen. It’s sort of traditional on MSE to recommend Doro but when you actually use one it’s a different matter all together.1 -
Some considerations:
- What's her expected monthly usage?
- Does she have a BB connection and can you use Wi-Fi calling.
- Are texts needed?
- It may be more cost-effective to get a SIM on a plan (or a 2nd SIM on an existing plan) if the calls are over £10/month.

You can get a free SIM, then top it up online as needed. For example Asda Mobile use the Vodafone network and you can top up with £5. Calls cost 15p/minute and you must make a chargeable call or top up once every 180 days I think. If she is going to use it often, you can buy 30 days unlimited calls and texts for £4. Or £5 if you want to include 3Gb data. Such "bundles" can be set to auto-renew every month, so you never run out. You have to register a credit/debit card with them if topping up regularlyKrakkkers said:My mum has asked me to get her a basic mobile and i have found a Nokia 105 4g for £13.50 from ASDA or Argos which would do just fine.
