Restaurant did wrong currency - extra charge
We wanted to pay in €s and told the waitress this. When we tapped the Barclaycard on Apple Pay, €s was displayed. The waitress then pressed 2 for €s, but then 1 for accept conversion in error instead of 2 for reject conversion (to pounds). The end result is that we have had a bank fee applied to the receipt and nothing can be done by the restaurant. Unsure what to do in this situation, so any help would be appreciated please. Thank you

I have a Curve card which has the fantastic feature to go back in time and choose a different card so I did this one time I was charged for a foreign cash withdrawal.
Other than that I'm not sure that anything can be done in this instance, just double check from now on.1 -
How much is the Bank fee for?

If I read correctly it was the waitress that pressed the wrong button.Hoenir said:

Curve seems good for this kind of thing - unfortunately don’t have it though. Problem is the waitress gave us the reader, we asked for euros it showed euros, we tapped the card, then she took the reader, and then it popped up asking re euros or pounds and she accidentally did the wrong thing somehowThanks all for your helppramsay13 said:I have a Curve card which has the fantastic feature to go back in time and choose a different card so I did this one time I was charged for a foreign cash withdrawal.

I’m not sure of the amount - it was a relative that had this happen so I haven’t seen the receipt but they weren’t happy about it. Just trying to find out what to do and then help them sort it.531063 said:How much is the Bank fee for?Hoenir said:

@sausage_time is correct - the waitress did it after we had already done the Apple Pay in euros. It seems to be the case over here that the conversion option pops up after you have already authorised/agreed/pressed buttons, so the only way to ensure the wrong thing isn’t done in error is to keep hold of the card machine until we get the receipt and press any buttons ourselves.sausage_time said:

I’ve told the relative to contact the bank - hopefully they’ll help. Wasn’t sure if they ‘had’ to though. With it being a credit card, wasn’t sure if it was covered under any legislation - as technically it was a charge we did not agree to. Tried to get them on Starling - they prefer the high street banks though unfortunately.sausage_time said:Starling seem somewhat sympathetic....

As the transaction happened abroad. UK legislation wouldn't be applicable.1

See my thread about DCC (Dynamic Currency Conversion).
First check the transaction slip: if it says that you were offered the choice and chose to pay in pounds then there is nothing you can do.
Incidentally this was not a mistake but what restaurants in Spain do as standard: they get part of the extra charge and the staff know this and simply ignore requests by tourists to pay in Euro.

If the card was issued in the UK, and the agreement made according to UK law, surely UK law appliesHoenir said:As the transaction happened abroad. UK legislation wouldn't be applicable.I consider myself to be a male feminist. Is that allowed?1 -
A good reminder to always pay in local currency.
