Plus £3-6 for some surface mount trunking, so say £20 for materials. An hour to fit at what ever exorbitant rate an NICEIC electrician would charge... Adding an extra socket would be well within the capabilities of a competent handyman. And if you wanted the socket at (or just above) skirting level, he/she is more likely to put it there rather than claiming it is illegal. Building regs only state a socket should be a minimum of 450mm above floor level, not must - A subtle difference.

Treasure the moments that you have. Savour them for as long as you can for they will never come back again.

It would look odd if it was 2 feet off the ground
We want it at skirting board level

If I was half as smart as I think I am - I'd be twice as smart as I REALLY am.
  • Presumably - it is normal practice to simply obtain the power from the nearest socket - rather than going back to the meter ?

As long as that socket is part of a ring, that's usually correct.

Can't take a spur off a spur though (if you want to comply with the regulations).

It depends on whether the socket is on a spur.
  • How much is this going to cost us?
We’re having a new kitchen ring put in, with oven etc. we’ve been quoted 8 sockets at £480, so £60 per socket. In the SE, trades are looking like they have less work then they have done recently.
    2006 LBM £28,000+ in debt.
2021 mortgage and debt free, working part time and living the dream

I think that the existing is a spur but I am unsure

The sparks will tell you. If it is he will normally break into the ring.
  • As long as the job isn’t within a ‘special location’ such as a bathroom or outdoors, you’re also allowed to install additional new light fittings, switches, sockets and even add a single fused spur to an existing circuit (a ‘spur’ is a new cable and socket run as a branch from an existing socket on the ring main).

One could quite literally install one on one's floor.
That's completely different, as there are floor boxes for that purpose. However at an excessively low level on the wall is liable to damage the plug and socket-outlet with the flex strain and contravenes BS 7671.
