We also received an email yesterday from Eon asking us to make an appointment for MDS to check our meters and I will do this in the next couple of days.  The gas meter is outside so they don't need access for that but the electricity meter is inside.  We don't have a smart meter and, because of the type of property (block of maisonettes), they can't fit one either - something to do with the comms boxes not communicating with each other.  As far as I know, the current meters have not yet reached the end of life stage - but I'm curious as to what will happen when they do.
Probably you will be much older, but no wiser🥸

As funny as all this is don't let it slip under the radar that Mr "smart meter" is back as Secretary of state for energy security and net zero.

How do you think the person who pushed smart meters out us going to react to how many are left to get installed?

    Interesting times ahead.

It seems that EON.Next sent out a load of emails along the lines of representative had called and was able to gain access to check your meter.  I got one of these yesterday. As my SMART meter is in a meter box accessible from outside the house, I decide to call them. I was not particularly polite. I said something like "I have received an email from you to the effect that an incompetent imbecile incapable of opening an external meter box came to my house and was unable to check my meter." After a short delay the agent the agent apologised and said that the email should not have been sent out to a customer like me with a smart meter. So I said something like "so the incompetent imbecile is your email department then." He did not deny this. And I duly deleted the email.
Using language like that these days is going to get you in a boat load of trouble.
I'm surprised they haven't taken things further.

  • In my call centre you get out on a special list (colloquially called "the screamers" )

Then calls from your number get routed to a small, dedicated team who are paid to put up with abuse. Longer wait times though

Hopefully he'll help put a stop to the daft idea that a consumer can pick and choose what sort of meter their supplier uses.
Hope so. It would be nice for him to finish the job he started.

You will get smart meters anyway. The electricity meter may work smartly. If the gas meter doesn't you will need to send readings just as you do now. You might want to consider getting the smart meter for electricity as, if it does send readings automatically, you will be able to make use of the cheaper smart tariffs.

When we had a visit to fit smart meters the engineer didn't seem to be too anxious to fit one just for the electricity but maybe that will change in the future.  Tbh, it's no hardship for me to give my own readings each month as the meters are easy to reach.  The only downside would be having to empty the (walk-in) cupboard where the electricity meter is so the poor soul would have room to work - it's a real glory hole - but that might be no bad thing as I'm sure there's loads of stuff that could go!

@debitcardmayhem - "Older but no wiser" - that thought often crosses my mind these days.   :D
