More on smart meters (email legit or not.)

We kept getting emails stating E.on needed to our check our old meter as it had reached end of its life (and why not book an appointment for a lovely new smart meter!), plus endless cold calling from companies wanting us to have a smart meter (all ignored). We’ve now had an email from E.on stating Morrison Data Services tried to obtain entry to check the meter (not when we were here they didn’t) and please make an appointment so they can take a look at the meter which should only take a few minutes. It all looks legit but I’m slightly suspicious because all emails from E.on are listed in the on-line account and this one isn’t there.  Is this just another attempt by the installers to get their foot in the door and then announce ‘oh dear, looks like you do need a smart meter’?

If the certification of your meter has indeed expired, then your meter will need to be replaced - and it will be with a smart meter (except in a vanishingly small number of cases).

It's legitimate and MDS are Eon's meter contractor. They do a very neat job.

Hi, it's all perfectly legitimate. You do need to allow them access to check the meter. It's one of the things you agree to as a customer. They need the right to inspect meters otherwise there is no way for them to detect fraud, i.e. people bypassing or otherwise tampering with the meter. They are also obliged to replace old meters as they cannot guarantee the accuracy forever. The current policy is to replace meters with smart meters, that isn't just EON but all suppliers. Best thing is just to make the appointment and get it sorted.

And with a smart meter you will be able to access time-of-use (TOU) tariffs that can save you a lot of money. Win win.

*It has to work first in sending regular readings.

    Which, overwhelmingly, they do.

    Email my parents received:

    Your May Power Move update.

    Hi (Name)

During May your smart meter failed to send us readings at certain times, so we couldn’t see the full picture of your electricity use.

Unfortunately this means you won’t receive a Power Move credit this month.

One, or even hundreds of examples to not prove "overwhelmingly" wrong, when there are 29 million domestic energy customers in the UK.

It seems that EON.Next sent out a load of emails along the lines of representative had called and was able to gain access to check your meter.  I got one of these yesterday. As my SMART meter is in a meter box accessible from outside the house, I decide to call them. I was not particularly polite. I said something like "I have received an email from you to the effect that an incompetent imbecile incapable of opening an external meter box came to my house and was unable to check my meter." After a short delay the agent the agent apologised and said that the email should not have been sent out to a customer like me with a smart meter. So I said something like "so the incompetent imbecile is your email department then." He did not deny this. And I duly deleted the email.

We also received an email yesterday from Eon asking us to make an appointment for MDS to check our meters and I will do this in the next couple of days.  The gas meter is outside so they don't need access for that but the electricity meter is inside.  We don't have a smart meter and, because of the type of property (block of maisonettes), they can't fit one either - something to do with the comms boxes not communicating with each other.  As far as I know, the current meters have not yet reached the end of life stage - but I'm curious as to what will happen when they do.
