ive always had a mobile contract over 30yrs now, but i am coming to the end of my current contract and wanting to go on sim only contract
do i just send my new supplier the pac code and will that start the 30 days notice to current supplier or do i still have to inform my current supllier that i am leaving

also how long does it take the switch over, will i be left with no connection in between switch over, new supplier also uses the ee network (lyca)

If you are beyond your minimum term you can switch provider without giving notice. Obtain a pac from your current provider and give it to your new network and your current provider will charge/refund you pro rata.
In the best case scenario you will lose your ee signal and your number will switch over in under an hour.  Then again think very carefully about using lycra (or even lyca), especially with a number you want to keep. Depending on your usage consider 1pmobile or rwg if you want to stay on an ee based provider.

I think you get your pac code from EE, when that gets implemented, the new network contact EE.

Why not just go sim only with EE?

You might want to check this thread for recent discussions about Lyca before you make that switch.

I went from contract with handset to SIM only with EE a few years ago,  really easy just did it on the website no need for PAC codes

Service with your current network is terminated when your number ports to the new network, giving notice is not involved.
Before actually giving your PAC to Lyca, do two things:
    1. Search this board for the various threads about them.
    2. Wait for EE retentions department to contact you and offer a discounted SIM-only tariff.
    Evolution, not revolution

Just to add to the comments above.

I strongly urge you not to switch to Lyca. Aside from the hacking issues I have also been reading about the precarious financial situation they are experiencing.

Plus for the last two years, many many posts about poor customer service including taking weeks to port.

I recently switched to 1p Mobile, which uses the EE network. Previously I had been with O2, then Giffgaff (uses and appears to be owned by Telefonica/O2). Low cost "non contract" SIM only providers, such as 1p and Giffgaff, are really good value and avoid being stuck with long contracts and annual above inflation price rises.

Giffgaff are a Which? recommended provider and have excellent service and are particularly easy to use. Although one of our mobiles is now on 1p Mobile as I often visit the Channel Is, where 1p offer free roaming (Channel Is and IOM are not included with Giffgaff EU roaming).

A word of caution with GiffGaff. Support is community based. What usually happens is that people reply with cut and paste answers in the hope of getting payback points and hence a payment.

For anything important that the community can't help with then you need to contact an agent. They aim to respond in ten hours but in my experience it's often longer.

For example, when there was a problem with a port it took them over 24 hours to reply. The problem was eventually sorted but it took longer because of the slow pace of emails.
  • thanks for the replies everyone, my contract isnt up till early oct so ive not jumped ship yet
i will look into the 1p supplier as i'm getting advised to keep away from lyca
    will keep you all updated
