Silly question...

Options
Want to buy my husband a new pay and go handset for his birthday but he needs to be able to use his current sim card in it. The sim card is ancient. There shouldn't be a problem putting his old sim into a brand new phone should there? They will be on the same network (o2).

I know it sounds like a daft question but I don't want to waste my money buying a phone only to discover that it won't accept his sim!

Weren't the really old sim cards bigger than the ones we have now?
Some days you're the dog..... most days you're the tree! :D
  • Thanks folks. It was actually the age of the sim that bothers me the most. It must be about 6 years old!

If it is a Pay&Go or U SIM in a Philips C12 or the older Diga, then I think you will be out of luck. What model is the phone?

That said, did they not discountinue C12s/Digas earlier this year?

If you buy a replacement O2 PAYG handset, you won't have to use this ancient SIM, as the existing account (number/credit) can be associated with the new SIM on registration. The new SIM may have a larger capacity for numbers/texts etc. and extra features.

  • The sim is the same size as a normal modern one.
The reason we can't simply transfer the number is that the sim carries a one-off bolt on which enables my husband to send a couple of hundred free texts every month for life. He would obviously lose these if he used the new sim card and transferred the number.
Is it the case that the old sim would restrict the use of any new calling features which the new phone may have?

Forgot to mention that this particular sim is currently being used in a 2003 Nokia 3650 without any problems.

old sim will work fine in any o2/unlocked mobile, your husband is on the old BT cellnet platform and yes transferring to a new sim that is on newer o2 platform is not available as different platforms have different payg/contract plans - hold on sim to it for dear life ! because o2 are bar-stewards not programming newer o2 system with old plans cos they want you off it onto a plan that makes them £ not loses them £, business is business fair enough but loyalty...NIL POINT
SO... now England its the Scots turn to say dont leave the UK, stay in Europe with us in the UK, dont let the tories fool you like they did us with empty lies... You will be leaving the UK aswell as Europe ;)

In which case it will work in any of today's phones.

Some really early pay as you go SIMs had to be used with the handset they came with, but that was when it was the O2 network was branded Cellnet and BT Cellnet.

I don't see why that has to be the case on O2. I have done similar upgrades on Orange with old unavailable texts for life add-ons and ring fenced tariffs with absolutely no problems. Are you saying that if this "texts for life" SIM went faulty, they would not provide a replacement?
