EDF smart meter nagging

To be fair to the OP I don't think a sticky would have covered his exact question. He wants to get the benefit of a smart meter tariff while simultaneously refusing a smart meter.booneruk said:There should be a sticky post on this board stating this clearly, since it keeps coming back and back.
free to ignore offers to install a smart meter, however good luck protesting once your meter is beyond its certification date. That's when you've got no choice.0 -
You might get a surprise a few years down the line when they've sent you a mandatory replacement email, due to their meter being out of its certification process, and you ignore it due to your auto-deletion.casjen said:Im on fixed EDF and got all the smart meter waffle. I don't need a smart meter and see no purpose in one. With some clever add blocking I dont get any pop ups on their website and all emails from them about smart meters get auto deleted as do any texts/notifications. One excellent result of this is that if they say I've breached Tcs of my tariff so putting me on the the SVR then please go ahead.. its cheaper than my fixed and will be still be after the next cap change
Unlikely it would happen without other forms of communication, but worst case is you can be disconnected if you refuse to allow the replacement of an uncertified meter.
Out of interest, what system do you use to auto-delete text messages you receive?0 -
Or when, say, a new government decides it's time to make smart meters mandatory, or to 'encourage' refuseniks start charging £1.50/day standing charge for dumb meters...MeteredOut said:

I'm not sure that very fair. They already have additional costs for the extra tin-foil.GingerTim said:

You don't need to sign anything to enter a contract.gbhxu said:
Don't have one. I've not signed anything.Hoenir said:
Read the small print of your supply contract that you agreed to. A breach of terms and conditions will be more than adequately covered. They'll be prepared for those who think they can pull a stunt.HarryIb said:and what is the end result if one continues to resist?0 -
If they start charging more, they should first ensure the ones installed are working first/charge less until they work.GingerTim said:

I agree with @gingertim but will add those with a smart meter that cannot connect for some reason can be exempt from his idea.Marvel1 said:

Those that refuse should pay more imo.1 -
Precisely - I thought it would go without saying that those with non-working smart meters or those in areas/properties without good coverage would be exempt from any penalty.MP1995 said:

Those that refuse should pay more imo.2 -
The reality already is those who have chosen to resist to have a smart meter are already paying a penalty. It's presented as lower rates for those smart meter owners who have pro-actively engaged with the new world of energy rather than higher rates for those without smart meters or haven't engaged but it comes to the same thing.
The two things that are missing IMHO are (1) some kind of discount for those with non-working smart meters (2) active marketing to help people understand the benefit of smart tariffs and to dispel the myth that you have to make major lifestyle changes to be able to benefit - not all smart tariffs are TOU and moving to a TOU tariff doesn't necessarily mean you have to change anything of significance to what you do when.

Those with non-working smart meters, get cheaper standing charges?GingerTim said:
