so , again, not to take this too OT but are standby's free, or just heavily discounted?

ashy_mashy -- how many seats would you need? I'd doubt you'd get them together but we've just come back and there were a few 'spare' seats dotted about (usually in the rows of 3 unsurprisingly!)

Standby tickets are heavily discounted. You get 80% off but not guaranteed to get on the flight. I only need 1 seat so I'm hoping I'll get on, but then again I could just buy a £450 ticket and not take any risks. My friend is flying with another airline on the same date and we're meeting there to get our hotel.

Were there a few seats 'dotted' around when you were going from Gatwick to Vegas or on the way from Vegas to Gatwick? I'm more concerned with the Gatwick to Vegas one. Also what date did you fly to Vegas? I hear September is a busy month in Vegas but I don't know if that applies to UK flights to Vegas.

On our way out to Vegas there were a couple of free seats certainly no more than a half dozen from what I could see
On the way back to the UK we had loads of spare seats....so much so that we could locate a group of 4 seats to go to sleep on with no problem

Has anybody any experience flying with US Airways?? and whats it like to connect at Philly, Which I'm doing in 10 weeks time!!

Travelled via PHL last year for the first time - I'd describe it as a "dream" going in, their immigration is huge and fast. However, it was a complete nightmare coming back - as the day goes on, they have more and more planes stacked waiting to land; once you've landed you're waiting for a gate; you run like mad from one arm of the terminal to another hoping that they've held the international flight; and then you wait and wait and wait in a queue to take off again ... I would say "or perhaps I had a bad experience" but looking around other forums, this seems normal for PHL!

Sorry! Perhaps you'll have a better time than we did.

Pretty full and with the kind of ticket you're describing Virgin's own staff/family will have a higher level of standby priority than you-If you can travel earlier in the week (Mon-Weds) you may have a better chance as loads are generally lighter then. So many first timers-and people who prefer to fly direct regardless of the other disadvantages-it'll never be "unpopular".
Never say never with staff standby but it's always a bit of a gamble on popular routes like this-do you have a back up plan-like transfer to Heathrow and fly into LAX or SFO instead and buy an internal flight -or is it Vegas direct or nothing ?

    21 days til Vegas Woo-Hoo

It's either direct to Vegas or nothing at the moment. I think because I just need one seat I might just get on.

Is this spam? just a question before the poster bites my head off! Just that it is an american site and the prize starts and finishes in the US meaning a retrurn flight from the UK would still be needed, so not a lot of good for UK residents as it is only for 3 nights in Vegas which can be had very cheap anyway.

Looks like I might have to try NWA although AA are cheapest at mo. Did you try the toilets out for comfort as Trets might like to know what his favourite seat is like:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:
Toilets were nice and comfy, that squishy seat thing going on. Lights were nice and bright so you would have no trouble reading, but they could have done with a dimmer in my view (if I had to be picky) the sink is right in front of you so nice place to rest your book or DVD player, and it was close enough that if you wanted to take a pillow in you could rest your head on it to fall asleep. How does that compare to VS Trets?
The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.
