Dustyevsky said:Have you considered the seeds purchased might need a winter outdoors before doing their thing? I can't say for sure without looking up their dormancy, but I'm sure you can do that.I know some other baby alliums I have took some time, and then they vanished in mid-summer to stay as a small 'pip,' popping up again in spring. The 2nd is definitely not basil, sickly or otherwise😉. There’s no discernible smell to it m, and I’m growing basil in my greenhouse. From a new packet of seed, and they’ve never been anywhere near each other.

Plant app says green amaranth for second one.

We got on really well with our buyers and we went through a lot of stress together with our moves, but I think I’ve left it too late. They moved in on 8 Jan 21. I’d love to see what they’ve done with it though.0 -

It may be right on this occasion - agree it doesn't seem to have opposite leaves, on closer examination. I've never grown amaranth so not v familiar with it; whereas self heal pops up everywhere in my garden, and seemed a more likely volunteer, (unless the OP has been growing amaranth previously), and it does (superficially!) look like that when growing vigorously in seed beds...

Any language construct that forces such insanity in this case should be abandoned without regrets. –

Treasure the moments that you have. Savour them for as long as you can for they will never come back again.5 -
badger09 said:OP here. No, I haven’t been growing amaranth, at least, not consciously. The 2 pictured plants just grew in the trough of fresh compost where I’d planted wild garlic seeds. I’ll leave them both for a while & see what develops. I’m growing herbs & some salad leaves so as long as they’re either edible or pretty, ideally both, they can stay.
