Another thought, is mother a widow?

Is it possible that this is an investment  inherited from a late spouse?
    Divorced, not widowed.

of course until I can track down the sender I have no possibility of moving to another account.
Why?  You could initiate a switch via the Current Account Switching Service, which automatically redirects incoming payments (and notifies the sender) so doesn't entail any requirement for the payee to liaise with payers....
I left the UK before the CASS began so am hazy on the details. As a non resident I'm not able to open any new UK accounts, am I able to use the CASS to transfer to an existing current account?
Yes, you don't need to open a new account to switch, although switching does close the old one, so make sure this is appropriate - I wasn't necessarily suggesting it as being the right thing to do here, just that it was a possibility that you seemed to have ruled out for an invalid reason.
I hadn't ruled it out, I wasn't aware of its existence.

There's an Abbey Life policy, which has been taken over by Phoenix Life, yes. I think the 200.xx payment is them, which just leaves me with the smaller amount, which appears to have a remarkably similar reference number.

You have LPA - contact Phoenix Life for information.

Perhaps there were two policies, one taken out initially and then a second one at a later point?

Phoenix Life are in the process of registering the LPA. Until then they won't release any information.

    It's something like that, yes.

The 200.xx appears to be an Abbey Life/Phoenix life annuity. I have a P60 for this.
The smaller amount also appears to be Phoenix Life but I don't have any paperwork as yet.
There is another ?pension? from Scottish Widows. Again no paperwork.

LPA is in process with Phoenix Life so I should be able to get to the bottom of that in due course. Scottish Widows will have to wait for now.

Thanks once more for all the assistance.
