Booked with BA flew with AA

If it was an American Airlines flight departing the USA then EC/UK261 will not be payable. It unfortunately doesn't matter that you booked with BA, as the law is clear it is the operating air carrier that is liable.
Nonetheless you should get in touch with AA to reclaim your out of pocket expenses. You can also ask for compensation and see if they make any offer (not sure there's any equivalent US laws that force them too)1 -

No compensation is due for this, as the delay was less than 3 hours.ABOUT 3 HOURS 30 MINS, THERE WAS A STRONG SMELL OF SMOKE INSIDE THE PLANE, AND THE PILOT HAD TO MAKE AN EMERGENCY LANDING IN NEWFOUINDLAND.
WE WERE ORIGINALLY INFORMED THAT A REPLACEMENT PLANE WOULD BE COMING FROM JFK AIRPORT TO CONTINUE OUR ONWARD JOURNEY TO LONDON HEATHROW.THE PLANE ARRIVED FROM JFK AFTER A 14 HOUR DELAY, BUT NOT TO TAKE US TO HEATHROW, BUT BACK TO JFK, WERE WE ARRIVED AT 12-30 AM,STAYED IN THE HILTON LONG ISLAND HOTEL, AND WE HAD TO LEAVE THE HOTEL TO BE BACK AT THE AIRPORT AT 05-30 AMThis counts as a cancellation under the law, however it sounds like what would be termed an "Exceptional Circumstance", so you aren't due fixed-rate compensation under UK261.THAT AFTERNOON, 19/5/2024, WE DEPARTED JFK, FLIGHT AA142, ARRIVING AT HEATHROW AT 11-30 PM, MEANING WE MISSED OUR FLIGHT TO NEWCASTLE, AND HAD TO STAY IN THE RADISSON BLUE HOTEL OVERNIGHT.
ON THE 20/5/2024, WE LEFT HEATHROW AT 15-20 PM ON FLIGHT NUMBER BA 1334, ARRIVING BACK AT NEWCASTLE AT 16-15 PM, INSTEAD OF THE ORIGINAL TIME OF 13-05 ON THE 18TH JUNE, 2024What was the scheduled arrival time of the AA flight? There might be a UK261 claim here, but I'll have to read the case law a bit more first to check.IT COST US 300 DOLLARS IN TAXIS FROM THE AIRPORT TO THE HOTELS, AND RETURNS, ADDITIONAL FOOD WE HAD TO BUY DUE TO THERE NOT BEING ANY REPRESENTATIVES AVAILABLE.Yes you can claim this back as expenses. Go to https://www.britishairways.com/travel/feedbackclaims/execclub/en_gb, fill in the details, don't write more than a few lines, and they are usually processed pretty quickly.
You usually aren't allowed to claim back taxi fares if there is a reasonable alternative on public transport, but BA are usually pretty good for paying for taxis compared to other airlines, and the transport options don't seem good here!0 -

expenses would be claimed from the operating carrier - OP needs to confirm whether the original MIA-LHR flight was BA or AA. Only if that flight was BA operated would they be claiming from BA.0 -

@Caz3121
The OP's dates are all over the place in the story. I suspect this was May not June.
Given that the OP posted in the wrong board and their post has been moved here, there is a chance that the OP will never return to the thread and no clarity given on the several questions being asked by others.0 -

AA56 left 33 mins late and diverted to YYT
So UK261 not applicable...and expense claim should go to AA not BA1 -

OP has only posted twice after joining yesterday, the original thread-starting post and then a brief follow-up....2 -

As has been stated UK 261 is not payable due to it being AA who was the carrier.However all the expenses you have incurred will be able to be claimed back. This is quite simple and shouldn’t present too many problems. IME the bigger airlines are very good at this, so make sure you have receipts. And don’t fill in the compensation section as there is a distinct difference and it wouldn’t be allowed.Sorry to hear of your troubles, it does happen I’m afraid. Airplanes are not perfect.Also, for the future, be careful around the connection times and allow a lot more than you think for a trouble free journey. It might cost a little more in the choice of flight and involve more waiting around, but it’s generally less stressful - especially if you aren’t a frequent traveller.2
