Right click the shortcut select "properties" select the General" tab where it says type of file Shortcut opens with excel select change and do above again.
See it that saves the option.

I'm at a loss
If you haven't already tried it have a go at using the MS Support Tool to remove all versions and then reinstall

Maybe it's just another "quirk" of Windows 11. Like the keyboard being inoperational for about 30 seconds after it wakes up from sleep - sometimes - and half the taskbar icons going invisible. Widely reported but no definite fix for it yet, that I've seen.Mind you, 11 is doomed anyway - XP was good, Vista a flop, 7 good, 8 a total disaster, 10 (they skipped 9 to distance 10 from 8!) good, and now we have 11, but not to worry, 12 is already in the making...

Tried your suggestion followed by a reinstall but the issue remains.

I think that you may be right. I agree with your thoughts on XP - rock solid!

You could try setting a new local user account, log into that and then try it from that account, to see it's your current profile is corrupt.

Will just open Excel then open the Excel file I need for the time being and look forward to any further suggestions.0
