Excel help - program opening slowly

I have just upgraded my rather old Windows 10 computer to a new better specification Windows 11 machine.   I have successfully transferred over all my old files and programs.  I’m running Microsoft Office Enterprise 2007 (I know it’s old and is no longer supported, but I’m familiar with it and it was free!).  Microsoft Update has fully updated Office with any patches released before support ended.  Word and shortcuts to documents open and work fine but I’m experiencing a glitch with Excel and seek help from the Forum.

If I click on a desktop shortcut to Excel it opens immediately, if I then click on a shortcut to an Excel spreadsheet it also opens immediately.  However, if I click on the shortcut to the spreadsheet without opening Excel first it can take 30 seconds or more to open and populate - it's so annoying!  This has never happened before.   Any help and advice on how this can be resolved will be much appreciated.

Have you installed third party ani-virus like Norton or Macafee on the new Windows 11 machine?

Also are you used OneDrive to sync your folders to the cloud?

Excel slow to open second (or subsequent) file - Microsoft Q&A - not quite the same as you're experiencing but worth trying?

Thanks Vitor - the file associations are correct.

If I right-click the file link and select open with Microsoft Excel it still takes 30 seconds or more to populate if I have not opened Excel immediately prior.

I run Avast anti-virus software which has never been an issue in the past.  I do not use OneDrive to synch to the Cloud.

If you know the ss is ok have you tried disabling Avast and then opening ss

I'm currently away from home for the week-end.  Will try that when home late on Monday.

Couple of other suggestions when you get home  if you haven't already tried it.
With your ss try "save as" (will have to rename if same location) and see how that opens. Create new ss and copy a tab over and save the new one, again see how that opens.

Turning off Avast makes no difference.  I have tried creating new spreadsheets and 'save as' but again this makes no difference and the spreadsheets take about a minute to populate if the Excel program is not opened first.

I have chatted to Microsoft help on-line about this and they have tried to help (given that Office 2007 is no longer supported they went beyond what I expected) - but without success.  When I tried to show them the issue when they had control of my computer everything worked fine, but as soon as the session disconnected the problem returned.

    It's so frustrating!

Sounds like Excel is waiting for some service which eventually times out, then Excel just continues to load.
I have seen this happening but never investigated it.

I have had a similar issue.
    I too have 2007.
I found that opening an Excel file caused the file to be associated with uSoft 365 and not the installed 2007.
Maybe check if that is happening?
