Heedtheadvice said:I have had a similar issue.I too have 2007.I found that opening an Excel file caused the file to be associated with uSoft 365 and not the installed 2007.Maybe check if that is happening?
I have checked and all my xls and xlxs files are associated with Excel.
I'm stumped!

It's the 2007 version - I don't seem to have any other program on my computer to open Excel files (though I'm not very technical so may have missed something!).

I understand that but just wondered if your PC was opening the online version I.e. 365 rather than the version on your PC. ....but maybe worth mentioning.

Can you locate the install directory? I think it might be C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\root\Office16 for 64 bit

Look in settings at your installed apps. If Microsoft 365 is there in any shape, such as the free online version, it may be causing the issue. If it is there, uninstall it, but beware, it may mess up your Office installation, so be prepared to reinstall Office 2007 again. If you do that it presumably will be without any updates it previously received. You can still get Office 2021, which is the last version without a subscription to 365, if you're prepared to use a newer version. I've just taken the plunge and gone from Office 2010 to Office 2021 on a new Windows 11 PC. It wasn't too painful!

Thanks to everyone for your continued help and advice - much appreciated!
- I removed the 365 and Outlook apps before I installed Excel 2007.
- Installed at: C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office
- I have reinstalled Office 2007 but the issue remains
I have noticed that when opening shortcuts to Word, the Microsoft Office large rectangular logo pops up briefly and then opens the Word file. When I open Excel the Microsoft Office large rectangular logo pops up briefly then opens the program. When I open a shortcut to or an Excel file, I do not get the Microsoft Office large rectangular logo popping up - it just opens a blank Excel spreadsheet that populates after about a minute. As before, if I open Excel and then open an Excel file it opens immediately.

Find the exact location of excel I use Office 24 64 bit so mine is different to yours C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\root\Office16\excel.exe
After you find it right click the shortcut left click "open with" scroll to bottom and left click "Chose an app on your PC"
The go to the exact location where excel.exe is and click on that, then select "always"
This will rule out if the shortcut is taking any type of detour

I do that and the link opens immediately (including the brief Microsoft Office large rectangular logo). However despite clicking on the 'Always' open with this button my computer doesn't seem to save this option and reverts to opening and displaying a blank Excel page that populates about a minute later.
So frustrating!
